While the latest "Fast" opened strongly, the manic muscle-car-filled film - with megastars Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - made almost a third less in its first weekend than the previous "Fast and Furious" chapter, which scored US$147.2 million.
"Fate", meanwhile, opened in North America and 63 worldwide markets, including China, the United Kingdom and Mexico.
The film broke the record for biggest global weekend ever, with 432.3 million dollars (£345.2 million), beating the previous record holder Jurassic World, which made 316.7 million dollars (£252.9 million).
That was high enough to take second place in the franchise for domestic openings behindFurious 7's $147 million debut in 2015.

"The Fate of the Furious" has numerous returning stars like Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese and Ludacris, but has added some new elements behind the camera in director F. Gary Gray and in front of the camera with Charlize Theron. With a $167 million domestic total to date against a $4.5 million production budget, it also remains one of the year's most profitable by percent returns. The franchise has earned over $3.9 billion (£3.1 billion) to date and at least two additional films are planned. They're poised perfectly for installments 9 and 10 to do very well.
