North Korea attempts but fails to launch missile: South Korea

North Korea denounced the United States on Friday for bringing "huge nuclear strategic assets" to the Korean peninsula as a U.S. aircraft carrier group headed for the region amid concerns the North may conduct a sixth nuclear test.

Wearing a Western-style black suit and white collared shirt, Kim was pictured on state-run television laughing heartily and clapping while watching soldiers, tanks and missiles on display in a large square.

North Korea held a large-scale military parade in Pyongyang to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's late President Kim Il Sung.

In recent months, a series of top USA officials have visited South Korea amid concerns that security cooperation between the allies could slacken in the wake of the March 10 ouster of former President Park Geun-hye over a corruption scandal. US military officials have said the USA doesn't intend to use force in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch by the North. Kim's No. 2 official accused Trump of "creating a war situation" and said the North "will respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack".

China has spoken out against North Korea's missile and nuclear tests and has supported United Nations sanctions.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence as part of a 10-day trip to Asia arrives in South Korea on Sunday in what his aides said was a sign of the U.S. commitment to its ally in the face of rising tensions over the North's weapons programs.

The U.S. nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group is also heading to the region.

North Korea responded by denouncing the move as an aggression and threatening a nuclear strike if the US were to take military action. He has repeatedly declared that if China, North Korea's dominant trading partner, isn't willing to do more to squeeze the North, the US might take the matter into its own hands.

Trump, who has proved to be unpredictable on foreign policy, has responded to the recent concerns over North Korea with a swagger that suggests a new, tougher stance.

Pence said North Korea's "provocation" was another reminder of the risks that US and South Korean service members face every day "in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world".

Into this tense environment, Pence made his first trip to the region since taking office in January.

Besides commercial ships and planes, Japan would want to send military aircraft and ships to assist in the evacuation if the South Korean government agreed, the official, familiar with the discussion, said. That the test failed is likely to be a considerable embarrassment for the country after yesterday's high-profile military parade, though of course their retaliatory capability remains substantial, and heavy based around artillery capable of reaching South Korea.

Even so, China is getting increasingly alarmed at the brinkmanship.
