North Korea Missile Launch Fails A Day After Military Parade

US Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to travel to Asia on the weekend, making stops in Seoul, Jakarta, Indonesia Tokyo and Sidney.

South Korean and U.S. intelligence officials were trying to determine what type of missile was used. "Therefore unless events overtake us and the United States of America does take military action before Vice-President Pence's tour finishes, he is likely to try and keep the conversation at a strategic relationship level, rather than discussing hypothetical military operations in any detail".

Trump has suggested that the U.S. will take a tougher stance against North Korea, telling reporters last week: "North Korea is a problem". Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time. The administration's immediate emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of Beijing.

North Korea launched a long-range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests previous year, including its most powerful to date.

Lourd - who also lost her 84-year-old grandmother and Fisher's mom, Debbie Reynolds, on December 28 - said. They're both the strongest and most vulnerable person in the room.

President Donald Trump was uncharacteristically quiet about the failed launch, which was attempted from the east coast city of Sinpo.

In a broadcast interview that aired on Sunday, McMaster said the US would rely on its allies as well as on Chinese leadership to resolve the issues with North Korea. "The president has no further comment", Secretary of Defense James Mattis said in a statement.

During the three days that Pence will spend in South Korea, multiple issues including countering Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs and matters related to the deployment of the THAAD could be discussed, experts told NK News. North Korea is thought to have a small arsenal of atomic bombs and an impressive array of short- and medium-range missiles.

Aside from improving the technology, North Korean missile and nuclear tests are seen by outside analysts partly as efforts to bolster the domestic image of leader Kim Jong Un and apply political pressure on Seoul and Washington.

In Seoul, South Koreas presidential office convened a national security council meeting to examine security postures.

North Korea has spent decades trying to develop operational nuclear weapons. The country launched a long-range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests past year, including its most powerful to date.

The attempt followed Trump's vow, as The Associated Press reported, that Kim Jong Un's government is a "problem" that will be "taken care of".
