A year earlier, Bobbi Gibb ran Boston as its first unregistered woman.

But it wasn't a bad day to be an American, either. According to the Boston Police Department's Facebook page, after a few moments of encouragement, the runner was back on her feet, and the officer was back at his post.

Kirui finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds to claim a silver trophy, a guilded olive wreath from Marathon, Greece, and the $150,000 first-place prize.

Also on the course will be the other woman who ran in 1967, and finished first. This will be her very first race since running in the marathon in 1967 and the last since 2011.

Geoffrey Kirui pulled away from Galen Rupp over the last few kilometres, winning the men's division of the 121 {+s} t Boston Marathon on Monday and ending Rupp's bid to become the first American victor since 2014.

Thirty thousand men and women are in Hopkinton, Massachusetts to take part in the one hundred and twentieth running of the Boston Marathon. Rupp was 21 seconds back, and Japan's Suguru Osako 30 seconds behind him.

This is also not her first time impressing on the global level as Kiplagat has also won the New York, Los Angeles and London marathons.

Edna Kiplagat, the victor of the 2017 Boston Marathon, is seen here second from left at the race's six-mile mark.

The 38-year-old mother of two broke away from Kenyan-born Rose Chelimo of Bahrain with five kilometres to go to win the race on her debut in 2 hours 21 minutes and 53 seconds.

We'll see Desiree Linden - a Californian, like Meb - who finished just seconds behind the women's victor six years ago.

Their victories marked a sweet return to the top for Kenya after rival Ethiopia's 2016 sweep behind Lemi Berhanu Hayle and Atsede Baysa.

The top group of seven runners included Americans Jordan Hasay and Desi Linden.

The bulk of the runners will be passing through the finish line between 10:41 a.m. and 3:04 p.m., the BAA said, though times are subject to change. "I had the best job in the world for a long, long time".

The winners' times are considered a world best and not a world record.

It's the first time ever that a woman has beaten the 1:30 mark.

The Boston Globe reports it was Evan's 19th time completing the race and his 52nd overall marathon. At the time, she didn't think it was a big deal since another woman ran the race without a number the year before.

Today, at 70 years old, Switzer ran the race again.

The record was 1:18:25 by Joshua Cassidy of Canada.

Leading the pack of the men's race at the Boston Marathon in Framingham, about six miles in, is Emmanuel Mutai, who is going for a unique feat.

Mutai finished second in London and NY in 2010 and won London the next year.
