Kirui waved and smiled as he took the tape in a time of 2hr 9min 37sec, with Rupp finishing in second.
Kirui finished in two hours nine minutes and 37 seconds after holding off a challenge by American Galen Rupp in the race's final stretch down Boylston Street, the site of the deadly 2013 bombing attack.
For its first 70 years the Boston Marathon had not allowed women to run - and nineteen sixty seven was no different. Times, luckily, have changed and women make up a large percentage of marathon runners.
