Here are the winners of the 2017 Boston Marathon

Geoffrey Kirui won the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday, pulling away from three-time U.S. Olympian Galen Rupp with two miles to go to give Kenya its first men's victory in five years.

Kirui waved and smiled as he took the tape in a time of 2hr 9min 37sec, with Rupp finishing in second.

Kirui finished in two hours nine minutes and 37 seconds after holding off a challenge by American Galen Rupp in the race's final stretch down Boylston Street, the site of the deadly 2013 bombing attack.

For its first 70 years the Boston Marathon had not allowed women to run - and nineteen sixty seven was no different. Times, luckily, have changed and women make up a large percentage of marathon runners.

Edna Kiplagat (KIP'-la-gat) has won her Boston Marathon debut. And on Monday in Boston, Switzer was back - this time as a celebrated guest. Then, in December, Kenyan Rita Jeptoo was stripped of her 2014 title for failing a drug test and it was handed instead to Ethiopia's Buzunesh Deba.

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the most prestigious races over the distance on the athletics calendar.

Those times are now official in the wheelchair races.

"The winners' times are considered a world best and not a world record".

The athletes had a tailwind of 13 miles per hour, the AP reports. It was 69 and warming at the halfway point in Wellesley and expected to be up to 72 degrees by the time the runners reached the finish in Boston's Back Bay.

The race has largely returned to normal four years after two bombs at the finish line in 2013 killed three people and wounded hundreds more. The 26.2-mile course will start in Hopkinton, Mass., and will run through downtown Boston.

"I had the honor and privilege to win for the people, with the victims' names on my bib", Keflezighi said, referencing the names of Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, Lu Lingz, and Sean Collier, which were written in marker in the corners of his racing bib during the winning run.
