Prince co-wrote and co-produced the songs with his mixing and recording engineer Ian Boxill, who spent the past year finishing the arrangements and mixing the songs.
The songs were written and recorded when Prince was an independent artist, "protesting what he saw as an unjust music industry", according to an RMA release.

The anniversary comes just a few weeks after Prince's sister Tyka Nelson appeared on the ABC special, "People Icons: Gone Too Soon" and during the interview she revealed that the "Little Red Corvette" singer predicted his death. The only problem is, the entity responsible for its release is now being sued by the estate for refusing to return those recordings and releasing them against the wishes of the late icon.
However, Boxill said in a statement on Tuesday that he felt Prince would have wanted the songs released independently because they were recorded at a time when he was embroiled in disputes with major record labels. A digital version of the EP is scheduled to be released available Friday at the usual outlets with a physical scheduled for June 2.

The Prince estate says that when it was learned Boxill was going to release the songs, he was demanded to return all the recordings in his possession, but he refused, leading to the lawsuit. Boxill's initial plan was to release Deliverance on the one year anniversary (April 21) of Prince's death. The suit also notes that holding of the unreleased Prince songs and allowing Boxill to release the album at his leisure "deprives Prince (and now the Estate) from choosing what is released to the public and when". The majority of sales will benefit Prince's estate.
