Trump's pick for Army secretary drops out

Amid growing criticism, Tennessee lawmaker Mark Green today withdrew as President Donald Trump's nominee for US Secretary of the Army. In a statement, Green said it was with "great regret" that he withdrew his name from consideration.

Green made a decision to stand down after the first nominee, Vincent Viola, a billionaire, withdrew in February, saying he was not able to overcome conflict-of-interest objections due to certain financial interests.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Channahon threw his support behind Green, signing a letter with 10 other House Republicans sent this week to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sen. "And unfortunately, due to false and misleading attacks against me, this nomination has become a distraction".

A retired Army flight surgeon who served for two decades after his graduation from West Point, Green worked as the CEO of a health care company in Tennessee in addition to his duties as a state senator.

At the Chattanooga event, Green said he doesn't believe students should learn about Muslim beliefs and religious practices and claimed erroneously that Muslims don't believe Jesus "was born from a virgin". Green's nomination and exceptional qualifications last week, noting that this would be a litmus test for Republicans - a choice between military readiness or political correctness: Time to Restore Courage, Character and Integrity to this Office. Air Force secretary nominee Heather Wilson is expected to be confirmed by the Senate on Monday.

In a statement released after his withdrawal, AMPA President Ashley Broadway Mack said "Mark Green should never have even been considered for Secretary of the Army".

Green pulled out after a month of calls for President Donald Trump's administration to choose someone else.

If Green had been confirmed, he would have succeed former Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, who made history as the first openly gay leader of a branch of the US military.

Also on Friday, a coalition of 41 organizations led by the Human Rights Campaign called on the leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee to reject Green's nomination.

The Pentagon and the White House had no immediate reaction to the move. "In 2013, Green blasted President Barack Obama for supporting what he said were "'transvestites in uniform".

"If you poll the psychiatrists, they're going to tell you that transgender is a disease", he told a crowd in Chattanooga a year ago.
