Always Dreaming leads the field into the stretch during the Kentucky Derby

Now, their partnership has claimed the ultimate prize.

Always Dreaming has splashed through the mud to win the Kentucky Derby, giving trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez their second victories in the race but their first together.

It's trainer Todd Pletcher's second Derby win. Velazquez's prior Derby win came in 2011 with Animal Kingdom. "We have had a great relationship for a long time now, and we have won a lot of races together".

Big payouts • Despite a victory by the favorite, Always Dreaming, there were some big payouts in the Derby exotic wagering pools. Saturday morning was cold and wet at Churchill Downs, but the skies cleared in the afternoon.

Further, he had given a second Derby win among 48 starters to Pletcher, the career victor of 4,300 races, 1,000 stakes and $336 million, $60 million more than any other trainer, who yet found validation with this second win, following on Super Saver in 2010.

"Growing up as kids, we've won a lot Kentucky Derbies but never in reality", Bonomo said. The two weeks he had between the Derby and the Preakness, I wasn't seeing the same aggressiveness I was normally seeing from him in his gallops, so I think the two-week turnaround hurt him.

Morris was a plus-seven at the time of his departure, and Crowder and Horford went on to have stellar games in his absence. At the same time , Porter and Thomas appeared to bang heads and Porter headed to the locker room bleeding from the nose.

"To me, it represents everybody who went to the race track for the first time with their dads and were just astonished by the brilliance of these equine athletes and fell in love with the sport", Vincent Viola said.

Super Saver only won the Kentucky Derby because he was the recipient of a ideal rail-skimming trip in a roughly run race; Always Dreaming ran away with the Run for the Roses because he proved, unequivocally, that he was a far superior horse to his 19 rivals.

Coping beautifully with the messy track while others faltered, Always Dreaming broke smoothly from the gate and patiently stalked the lead for the first half of the 1 1/4 mile classic before taking charge going into the far turn.

No matter what you think of Pletcher, and believe me, there are plenty of people who revel in Pletcher's lack of success in the big race, the trainer did his best training job with Always Dreaming.

One of three entrants for trainer Todd Pletcher, the Kentucky-bred took the favorite mantle nearly as soon as betting opened on Friday. It's a place where in the last 20 years, the Triple Crown dream has continued for 10 of the horses.

After the race, Pletcher said he was totally absorbed in his jockey's ride and his colt's performance.

He then held off Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari's championship leader, in the closing laps to cross the line with a 0.6-second advantage.

Which horses are running in the 2017 Kentucky Derby?

Having Velazquez as a passenger helped significantly in that regard. Always Dreaming's only stakes victory before the Derby was his relatively easy win in the Florida Derby, causing some critics to question if he'd really been tested.

None of the other come-from-behind horses challenged the top three. The second step I had to ask him to break. But as Classic Empire and everyone tried to make that late run, the co-favorite entering the race had another gear.

Following the top three in order were Classic Empire, Practical Joke, Tapwrit, Gunnevera, McCraken, Gormley, Irish War Cry, Hence, Untrapped, Girvin, Patch, J Boys Echo, Sonneteer, Fast and Accurate, Irap and State of Honor.

"It's surreal", Bonomo said.

At the post-race press conference, Keith Latson, DVM, Dipl. "I guess dreams do come true".

Buffalo has not made the postseason since the 1999 season and have recorded just two winning seasons (9-7) over the past 17 years. Upon firing Whaley, Pegula said he was seeking a GM who would have a collaborative front-office structure.

With the last four Derby races going to the favorite, the odds could weigh against yet another garland of roses draped around the favorite for a streak of five in a row not seen in over 120 years.
