Putin aide says Moscow unconcerned about Comey

State Department photo/Public Domain (WASHINGTON) - Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Wednesday morning to discuss a dizzying array of issues amid the firestorm over President Trump's abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey.

The White House says President Donald Trump stressed several issues in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (SEHR'-gay LAHV'-rahf), including ending the civil war in Syria and improving U.S. -Russia relations.

Peskov calls it "an entirely domestic matter" for the United States.

There is nothing inherently wrong with Trump's inclusion of Kislyak in Wednesday's meeting, but to be weirdly secretive about it is to invite additional scrutiny that the White House does not need right now.

The Russian minister said there would be four de-escalation areas, including in the south, "which is a particular interest for the U.S.", as it would stabilize the border area between Syria, Jordan and Israel.

"We did not discuss the sanctions".

The Trump administration and GOP lawmakers say Comey was sacked for other reasons, including his handling of the Clinton email probe. When asked whether the Comey dismissal had affected his meeting, Trump said, "not at all".

During a photo opportunity ahead of their sit-down meeting, NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell asked whether the firing of Comey "cast a shadow over your talks".

'The Democrats have said some of the worst things about James Comey, including the fact that he should be fired, but now they play so sad!' he tweeted. "You are kidding! You are kidding!"

Lavrov threw his head back in a dismissive gesture and walked away, shaking his head. He also referred to Mr Trump's aides as "people of action".

Trump, heeding advice from Department of Justice, fires Comey, informing him that he is "not able to effectively lead the bureau". In the report, Konstantin Kosyachev, a senior Russian legislator, said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation director was let go "because he's not supposed to act like he's the president".

"If we manage to find. a common position with the United States on this issue, it will be the most important result", he said, quoted by the state news agency Interfax.

The U.S., along with some European allies, has imposed several rounds of economic sanctions on Russian Federation in response to what they called the annexation of Crimea and destabilizing activities in eastern Ukraine. "We have nothing to do with that".

At a Senate hearing Monday, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates said she warned Trump's White House in January that Flynn "essentially could be blackmailed" by the Russians because he apparently had lied to his bosses about his contacts with Kislyak.

Trump "also raised the possibility of broader cooperation on resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere", it added.
