White House postpones meeting to decide on participation in Paris climate pact

President Donald Trump delayed a decision on withdrawing from the landmark Paris climate accord amid disagreements about the nature of the pact, the White House said Tuesday.

'We are now reviewing issues related to the agreement, and expect to have a decision by the time of the G7 Summit, late May-ish, if not sooner, ' White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in March.

Salaheddine Mezoua of Morocco, who presided over the last high-level climate negotiations in 2016, said he trusted that "the good sense and pragmatic spirit President Trump and his team" would prevail.

Trump is getting a variety of advice regarding the climate deal reached during President Barack Obama's administration, officials said.

Despite uncertainties about whether the United States will remain committed to the Paris climate accord under President Trump, diplomats convened talks in Bonn, Germany, on May 8 about implementing the details of the global deal to combat global warming.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer speaks during the daily press briefing, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at the White House in Washington.

Spicer on Tuesday declined to detail the deliberations, what strategies Trump might be considering or whether there's any conclusion to be drawn from the delay and the postponed meeting top Trump officials had planned to have Tuesday.

Pro-Paris Trump officials have been bolstered by multinational corporations and European leaders who've been lobbying the administration to stay in the agreement that was hashed out in Paris, France in 2015.

That session, along with other West Wing meetings to discuss the issue, have become heated as Trump's advisers air their differences over the Paris agreement.

The White House pushed off a meeting to hash out its position on the Paris climate agreement Tuesday for a second time. Trump said while campaigning that he opposes the agreement and, in April, Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, called the pact a "bad deal" for the US.

Under former President Barack Obama, the USA and China issued several joint statements on climate change, even announcing together they would sign the Paris agreement. Climate change was widely seen as one of the few bright spots of cooperation between Beijing and the previous Obama administration in Washington.

Trump has resolved to announce his intentions by this month's Group of 7 meeting in Sicily, meaning a decision to withdraw could isolate him at his first gathering of world leaders.

"It risks undermining the dynamic" of give-and-take built up over years in the United Nations climate negotiations process.

She did not say who was involved in discussions about the Paris agreement.

Many nations and NGOs are urging Trump to stay in the global agreement.
