The Latest: WikiLeaks awaits UK decision on Assange's status

Since 2012, the WikiLeaks founder had sought asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, avoiding extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault and rape stemming from a 2010 incident.

Assange says he has remained in the west London embassy for fear that if he were to face trial in Sweden, he would be extradited to the U.S. to face charges over Wikileaks.

At a press briefing earlier today, Sweden's top prosecutor Marianne Ny said that by remaining in the embassy in London Assange had evaded the exercise of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) that would have seen him extradited to Sweden.

Assange isn't completely out of the woods yet on rape allegations with prosecutors in Sweden claiming they can re-open the investigation if he returns to the country by 2020, when the statute of limitations ends. "I do not forgive or forget", Assange tweeted Friday morning.

As recently as April, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said arresting Assange was a "priority," the BBC reported, even though formal charges against Assange and WikiLeaks hadn't been filed.

The huge release of memos known as "cablegate", which embarrassed governments worldwide, would not have been possible had it not been for U.S. soldier Chelsea Manning, who handed WikiLeaks 700,000 classified documents.

It's not known if US officials have asked British police to arrest Assange because of a possible sealed USA indictment against him.

In Assange's first response, posted to Twitter, his reaction was simple: a broad smile. He said the day marked an "important victory", but noted that he still could be prosecuted by the United States.

The preliminary investigation against Julian Assange for rape (lesser degree) is to be discontinued. We have won the Assange case.

Acknowledging that he still faces arrest by the UK for breaking bail and failing to surrender himself to court while in the embassy, he continued: "The UK has said it will arrest me regardless". The releases sure to anger the Trump administration, which has recently turned against Assange after previously promoting him and his work during their campaign.

The pale WikiLeaks boss has been under self-imposed imprisonment at the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012 in order to avoid evade a European Arrest Warrant, believing he would be under threat of extradition to the USA over his involvement in the disclosure of various secret cables. "We are not making any pronouncement about guilt", Ny said.

The CPS spokesman could not confirm whether Britain had received a U.S. extradition request.

During last year's US presidential election campaign, WikiLeaks published emails from Hillary Clinton's staff and the Democratic National Committee which some believe helped to lose her the election to Trump.

The Swedish prosecutor's office said in a statement it had chose to end its seven-year probe. "Focus now moves to United Kingdom", the anti-secrecy website tweeted.

But it adds that Assange is now wanted for a "much less serious offense" than the original sex crimes claims, and police "will provide a level of resourcing which is proportionate to that offense".
