Comey Memo Would Asking to End Probe Be Obstruction

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told senators he knew President Donald Trump planned to fire FBI Director James Comey before he wrote his memo criticizing Comey's actions, two senators told reporters Thursday after a private meeting with the official. Mr Mueller will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he uncovers.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department appointed Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. It immediately escalated the legal stakes - and the potential political damage - for a president who has tried to dismiss the matter as partisan witch hunt and a "hoax".

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, said simply: "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House".

We don't know whether that is what actually happened.

Most Republicans have said the current Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and investigations in the Republican-led Congress into the Russian Federation matter are sufficient.

Trump fired Comey on May 9.

Comey's testimony in March suggested that he has not softened in the past 12 years. He was so valued that President Barack Obama asked him to stay on two years longer than his 10-year term.

When Comey was deputy attorney general, in 2003, he appointed special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald to lead an investigation into whether George W. Bush administration officials illegally leaked the name of Central Intelligence Agency operative Valerie Plame to a journalist. Mr Rosenstein said the appointment was "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome".

The tumult in Washington deepened over allegations Trump had sought to end the FBI's investigation into ties between Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and Russian Federation. Comey claims Trump asked him to drop the federal investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's connections with Russian Federation during the presidential campaign.

First reactions from Congress were mainly positive.

In a letter to acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Jason Chaffetz, demanded the bureau turn over "all memoranda, notes, summaries, and recordings referring to or relating to any communications between Comey and the president" by next Wednesday. "Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

"I didn't hear anything classified" during the briefing, Graham said.

In the 1990s, Democrats complained that independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who investigated President Bill Clinton, overstepped his authority.

The bombshell came as the beleaguered administration was still struggling mightily to explain Monday's revelation that the president had disclosed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and the country's ambassador to the United States.

"No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly, " he said.

"You can't let them get you down". "And I think we're making good progress". "You don't make that phone call unless James Comey tells you to make the phone call".
