Cars, two-wheeler sales up in May on positive sentiment

The country's largest auto maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) today posted an 11.3 per cent rise in total sales in May at 1,36,962 units as against 1,23,034 vehicles in the same month previous year.

While sales of mini cars Alto and WagonR grew by 18.1 per cent to 39,089 units, those of compacts Swift, DZire, Ignis, Celerio and Baleno increased by 10.1 per cent to 51,234 units.

This was mainly due to the double digit growth of its passenger vehicle segment which posted a 15.1% growth.

The creditors agreed on a plan to sell the remaining assets in order to realise value. Arrium owns Whyalla's steelworks - the central employer in the Iron Triangle town.

Similarly, the mini segment (Alto, WagonR) grew by 18 per cent to 39,089 units last month as compared with 33,105 units in corresponding month past year.

However the highest percentage growth was witnessed by the booming utility vehicle segment with the Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza growing 66.3 percent with sales of 22608 units in May 2017 against 13596 units in the same month of the previous year. Sales of vans went up by 3.5 per cent to 12593 units. It sold 39,089 units in May 2017 in comparison to 33,105 units during the same month a year ago.

The compact auto segment with the popular Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Ritz and Dzire models posted a growth of 10.1 percent with sales of 51234 units in May 2017 against 46554 units recorded in the same month in the earlier year.

However, sales of the mid-size sedan Ciaz fell by 9 per cent YoY to 4,724 units in May as against 5,188 units in May previous year.

Maruti Suzuki also sold 428 units of its light commercial vehicle (LCV) Super Carry during the month of May.

Exports of the company also declined to 6,286 units during last month as compared to 9,872 units in corresponding month a year ago.
