May's lead narrows to 3 percent points in latest YouGov poll

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party could fall short of winning an overall majority in next week's general election, according to new YouGov research for The Times newspaper.

On Tuesday, Ms. May sought to re-focus the debate on Brexit, an issue perceived to be one of her stronger ones, telling the audience gathered in the city of Wolverhampton that she was prepared to take hard decisions that leadership demanded, including in negotiations with other European Union leaders, set to commence 11 days after the elections. If the YouGov model turns out to be accurate, May would be well short of the 326 seats needed to form a government in June, when formal Brexit negotiations are due to begin.

But unless she handsomely beats the 12-seat majority her predecessor David Cameron won in 2015, her electoral gamble will have failed, and her authority could be undermined just as she enters formal Brexit negotiations.

Sterling showed little reaction to the poll, steadying against the dollar after plunging around 2 cents last week.

The pound was flat against the U.S. dollar at 1.28 and only marginally higher versus the euro at 1.145, after dipping by as much as 0.5% following a YouGov poll indicating that the Tories could lose 20 seats and see its majority wiped out.

The Prime Minister insisted the only poll that matters is the June 8 vote after the seat projection study suggested the United Kingdom faces a hung parliament.

That fall came as the poll lead narrowed in the wake of a climbdown over controversial plans to make some elderly people pay a greater share over their care costs.

Both the Survation and ICM polls were conducted in the aftermath of a suicide bombing which killed 22 people in Manchester last Monday.

The Pound Sterling edged up versus the US Dollar as investors dismissed the latest opinion polls which showed a narrowing lead between Theresa May, the Prime Minister, and the Labour party candidate. "This is our best estimate of the range of seats the parties would win if today's polls were the election result", the company's head of political polling, Joe Twyman, said in an interview.

However, the YouGov projection allows for big variations, indicating the Tories could get 345 seats on a good night, or as few as 274 seats on a bad night. Polling experts, including YouGov Chief Executive Officer Stephan Shakespeare, pointed out that the analysis wasn't a prediction, but rather an attempt to translate current polling into seats.

YouGov's model draws on the data collected from around 50,000 panellists quizzed on their voting intention over the course of a week and uses a recently-developed technique called multilevel regression and post-stratification (MRP).
