Sterling hammered by poll showing risk of hung parliament

The poll found just over half of the 1,009 respondents thought May would make the best prime minister, whilst support for Labour's Jeremy Corbyn stood at just 30 percent, albeit higher than in previous surveys. Sterling has since rallied further, hitting an 8-month high of $1.3047 on May 18.

Blue-chip companies, which report in USA dollars or euros, get a lift on the FTSE 100 Index when the pound suffers because their earnings benefit from a more favourable currency translation.

The pound has reversed almost half of its 4 percent gain since May called the election, her narrowing lead in polls weighing on investors' expectations of a landslide victory for the Conservatives, which has been pitched as strengthening May's hand in Brexit negotiations.

The pound fell sharply after a projection suggested the Conservative Party could fail to win an outright majority in the election on 8 June.

Barely reacting to euro zone inflation data that came in below expectations, the euro ticked up to a three-day peak of $1.2230.

But polls taken since the opposition Labour Party and May's Conservatives released their election manifestos have shown Labour catching up, worrying investors and pushing the pound down nearly 2 cents last week.

The FTSE 100 Index was up 20.01 points to 7,546.81, with sterling enduring a tumultuous morning on the currency markets after slumping overnight in response to an election poll pointing to a smaller Conservative lead. "A strong Conservative majority is also only a necessary, not sufficient condition for a smooth Brexit", he said.

So from its lows, the pound recovered to show a gain of 0.31% to $1.2900, while against the euro it was down just 0.08% at €1.1482, after earlier falling as low as €1.1428.
