This Time, Trump Is Right About Trade

The Tuesday morning tweet was Trump's second attack on Berlin in a few days.

In his latest attack on Berlin, Trump tweeted that the USA was running a huge trade deficit with Germany, having previously complained that too many German cars were bought on the US.

"Many commentators thought that previous year when we had Brexit and then Donald Trump's victory that this would be like a populist virus spreading throughout Europe and you'd see the beginnings of the end of the European Union", Barber said. "And that is why I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands". Additionally, he accused Berlin of exploiting the benefits of American markets and overriding United States carmakers.

The tweets echo comments reported last week by Der Spiegel when he said, "The Germans are bad, very bad", referring to "millions" of German cars sold in the U.S.

Martin Schulz, an outspoken Social Democrat and center-left chancellor candidate, said later on Tuesday that Trump was "the destroyer of all Western values".

Martin Schulz, leader of the center-left Social Democrats, told reporters Trump was "the destroyer of all Western values", adding that the United States president was undermining the peaceful cooperation of nations based on mutual respect and tolerance.

A day later, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also lashed out at Washington, saying the Trump administration's "short-sighted policies. stand against the interest of the European Union".

"We do not have the right to spoil the environment for future generations. that is, morally speaking, a crime on our part", Modi said after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel made comments Sunday that Europe "must take its fate into its own hands", as the USA and the United Kingdom are looking after their own interests.

"I think she made one very catastrophic mistake and that was taking all of these illegals, you know, taking all of the people from wherever they come from".

After a frosty meeting with Merkel in Washington in March - which he initially described as "GREAT" - he launched a diatribe the following day, accusing Germany of owing "vast sums of money" to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the United States.

Merkel said that Europe must "take our fate into our own hands" and added that it should step up as a diplomatic player on the worldwide stage.

The strongly-worded message and the shock it caused prompted Berlin to downplay the tone and content of Merkel's speech.

"Our trans-Atlantic relationship is of the utmost importance", she said.

Merkel tried to ease the dispute Tuesday by saying "transatlantic relations are of paramount importance".
