Trump Leans Toward Unwinding Climate Commitment

It comes amid reports that Trump plans to withdraw the United States from participation in the agreement among almost 200 nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It quotes two sources with direct knowledge of the decision.

It is unclear whether Trump has the votes.

What is not yet clear is whether Mr Trump plans to initiate a formal withdrawal from the Paris accord, which under the terms of the agreement could take three years, or exit the underlying United Nations climate change treaty on which the accord was based. That promise helped rally supporters sharing his skepticism of global efforts to police US carbon emissions.Trump has repeatedly expressed doubts about climate change, at times calling it a hoax to weaken USA industry.

Politico and CNN are also reporting Trump's intention to pull out of the agreement, citing White House officials.

"From a foreign policy perspective, it's a colossal mistake - an abdication of American leadership " R. Nicholas Burns, a retired career diplomat and the under secretary of state during the presidency of George W. Bush, told the Times.

Last week, leaders of other wealthy democracies urged Trump to commit his administration to the agreement at the G-7 summit in Sicily, but they said in their closing statement that the USA, for now, "is not in a position to join the consensus". Nicaragua and Syria are the only other nations that opted not to support the deal that's also seen as one of former President Barack Obama's most important achievements.

Exiting the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has been championed by conservatives who want to make sure a future president can't simply rejoin the Paris agreement, which 147 countries signed onto in 2016.

Hamilton: 2017 title battle is far from over
But the triple world champion admitted he can ill afford another off-colour weekend if he is to halt Vettel's charge. But time is short, as Monaco's headaches are the same as will be experienced in forthcoming races .

Almost 200 nations agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made an impassioned appeal for the world to intensify action to combat climate change and implement the Paris Agreement to limit carbon emissions.

Trump said at a G7 summit on Satuday that he would decide whether to withdraw from the Paris accord this week.

McKenna has said what the USA chooses to do is up to the US, but Canada won't wait.

She says no one government can stop the momentum toward tackling climate change, adding that Canada will continue "marching on".

It was not immediately clear whether the president intends to make a quick, clean break with the treaty or to work out a full, formal withdrawal, which could take three years.

Worldwide leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

It comes as Finland's Prime Minister Juha Sipila told parliament on Wednesday such a move would be a "big setback".

Truck fire closes I-25 at Belleview in both directions
A massive truck fire in south Denver has shut down all lanes on I-25, snarling traffic for miles in the middle of the work day. Interstate 25 is closed between Orchard Road and Belleview Avenue near the Denver Tech Center .

The decision would be a significant foreign policy break with almost every other nation on earth and a major reversal of the Obama administration's efforts on climate change, CNN reported.

It caps and reduces the use of HFCs in a gradual process starting with action by developed countries in 2019, including the United States, the world's second-worst polluter, and then by over 100 developing countries starting in 2024, including China, the world's top carbon emitter.

"Our refusal to panic must be accompanied by intensified efforts to fight climate change".

A senior European Union official said the EU and China would reaffirm their commitment to the pact regardless of what Trump did, and spell out, during talks Friday in Brussels, how they would meet their obligations. He also had to navigate a split among his advisers.

The non-binding climate deal is set to take effect in 2020, and asks that all signing countries - rich and poor - take concrete steps to reduce their emissions in the face of climate change, while leaving some flexibility for how they do it. A dozen large groups including the oil major BP, agrochemical giant DuPont, Google, Intel and Microsoft, have urged Trump to remain part of the deal.

But Trump's daughter Ivanka pressed aides to look at the full picture when considering what withdrawal could mean.
