India's environment organisations blast Trump's Paris deal decision

Share prices rose after President Trump's announcement he would take the United States out of the Paris climate deal.

Hours after Trump's announcement, Pittsburgh's mayor took to the airwaves to highlight the potential for grassroots climate change action by communities across the country.

India, a major polluter and a growing economy, has kept mum on whether the US decision will affect Indian energy policy, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi - who is coming to Paris on Saturday to meet Macron - offered no reaction to Trump's decision.

"Just hoping you can clear this up once and for all: yes or no, does the President believe that climate change is real, and a threat to the United States?"

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry called Trump's decision "an act of global, generational vandalism. inflicting damage that our grandchildren will be unable to undo".

He wrote on Twitter "Am departing presidential councils".

The Paris accord aims to prevent average temperature around the world from heating up by more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) before the end of the century, compared to before the start of the industrial age.

Several other major companies, including Morgan Stanley, Unilever, Intel and big tech firms, such as Apple, had opposed withdrawal, saying it would have spurred energy innovation in the United States, among other benefits. As part of its contribution towards this goal, the United States had pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 per cent compared to 2005 levels by the year 2025. "The Trump Administration must not only back the Agreement but be a driving force in tackling climate change".

"I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris", Trump said. He said he would be willing to renegotiate under different terms.

"We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris agreement can not be renegotiated, since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies", said a joint statement signed by German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Emmanuel Macron, and Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni.

European heavyweights France, Germany and Italy said in a joint statement on Thursday that they regretted Trump's decision to withdraw from the accord, while affirming their "strongest commitment" to implement its measures. "I do, and I always will".

Donald Trump's decision to pull the USA out of the landmark Paris climate agreement prompted scorn not just from global leaders, but also from scientists, big business heavyweights and other influencers across the board.

Robert Murray, chief executive of Murray Energy applauded President Trump's "steadfast leadership, and his delivery on this important campaign commitment".

While his move was criticised by leaders across the world, Trump said as President he has one obligation and that is to the American people.

Paul Bailey, the president of the coal lobbying organisation American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, said the standards established under the previous Obama administration were too stringent.

President Donald Trump left the Paris climate accords Thursday, joining Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations outside of the pact meant to curb climate change.

After the president's announcement, Chevron also said it supported a global framework.

The appointment is effective immediately and comes amid concerns about the company's trajectory after a bout of weak sales. First-quarter profits dropped and last week, Fields announced Ford was cutting 1,400 jobs in North America and Asia .

Ironically, the withdrawal by the USA from the Paris Climate Accord is also out of step with most Fortune 500 companies and businesses generally which have invested heavily (over a trillion dollars) in renewable and alternative energy.
