US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer was subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee Tuesday as part of ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddlingin the US presidential election.

Public testimony by the former FBI director could mark another major development in the controversy engulfing the Trump administration about past contacts with Russian officials - and whether the president or White House officials took steps to try to squelch the investigation.

The subpoenas are part of an effort by congressional investigators to obtain testimony, personal documents and business records from Michael Cohen, Michael Flynn, and their business firms.

Comey's associates have said Comey told them that Trump asked him at a January dinner to pledge his loyalty to the president and, at an Oval Office meeting weeks later, asked Comey to consider ending an FBI investigation into Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn. But authorized USA officials can request that the names be revealed to them - a process known as "unmasking" - if knowing the name is necessary to understand the intelligence.

The source, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said Flynn would turn over personal documents and specific business records.

Cohen is one of several Trump associates under scrutiny in an Federal Bureau of Investigation examination of possible contacts between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, according to the New York Times.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has been making the rounds of news programs to stoke up suspicions about Trump administration dealings with Moscow.

The subpoenas seek information on requests from Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, according to the Journal.

Flynn left the White House in February after less than one month on the job after reportedly misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the Russian ambassador.

As of Tuesday night, Cohen said he hadn't yet been subpoenaed, but added, "If I was, I would comply". Republicans have been hammering away on why Trump officials' names were disclosed internally in classified settings.

A top communications aide to President Donald Trump is exiting the White House as the embattled president considers a broader shakeup amid rising anxiety over investigations into his campaign's contacts with Russian Federation.

Trump fired Flynn in February amid questions about whether he inappropriately talked about US sanctions against Russia with a Russian official and then misled then-Vice President-elect Pence about those talks.

The diplomat's calls were recorded as part of routine USA intelligence monitoring of ranking foreign officials, and the Justice Department warned the White House that Flynn could be blackmailed for his statements about those contacts.
