Following the report, stock futures were higher, but slightly below where they sat ahead of the number.

The latest figures also showed wage growth stuck at a relatively sluggish 2.5% though, more positively, the unemployment rate fell to a 16-year low of 4.3%. The labor force participation rate fell 0.2 percentage points - to 62.7 percent - and the employment-to-population ratio also fell 0.2 percentage points, suggesting that would-be workers are leaving the workforce after failing to find suitable employment. Notable improvements came in the healthcare industry, with 24,000 jobs added in May; the mining industry added 7,000, food services improved by 30,000, professional and business services added 38,000 positions.

Gains were broad, with each of the 11 major S&P sectors on the plus side, led by gains in materials, up 1.09 per cent and healthcare, up 1.18 per cent. Manufacturing payrolls fell by 1,000. Hiring fell for the fourth straight month among traditional retailers that continue to lose ground to Internet rivals. The average workweek was flat at 34.4 hours.

By comparison, the USA added 615,000 jobs between February and April of past year, and 586,000 jobs in 2015. Instead, Brainard is anxious by the fact that low unemployment and the seemingly strong labor market haven't stoked higher core inflation (which strips out volatile food and energy prices).
