CNN reports that a total of 37 people have been killed at the Resorts World Casino and Hotel in the Philippines after a lone gunman forced his way into the casino around midnight local time (Thursday ET), shooting TV screens with an assault rifle and setting gambling tables ablaze by pouring gasoline on them. He carried no identity documents, police added. It was not clear if the sprinklers had worked.

The magazine also encouraged fighters to use fire to carry out terrorist attacks, noting that flammables are "a quick option for anyone intending to join the just terror campaign". He says, "From the time he barged in and until the end, he was alone". Police confirmed he had died in a room on the fifth floor of the complex's hotel.

A South Korean foreign ministry official said one of its nationals died during the attack. He said the others sustained only minor injuries. He then made his way to a room where he knew casino chips were being stored, shot at the door, and began looting the place.

According to media reports, a masked gunman stormed into the casino at Resorts World Manila hotel in the capital city of Philippines on June 1 and opened fire at the guests, most of whom were foreigners, causing panic and injuring a few people. Police said they were not looking at other motives, although security in the capital had been beefed up.

Stephen Reilly, the casino's chief operating officer, later said that 35 people had died - 13 employees and 22 guests - in what he described as a "senseless attack". The gunman later killed himself. Yongco was trapped on the second floor by the smoke engulfing the casino area. Before the attack, he got out of the auto and entered the building with his rifle.

All indications point to robbery and not terrorism, according to Dela Rosa.

"The victims who suffered from suffocation went up to 36", Manila police chief Oscar Albayalde told reporters. He added the authority would instruct shopping malls and hotels to be stricter with their security and that protocols would be reviewed.

He said it seemed like the gunman was focused on the gambling table and stealing chips. "There is no element of violence, threat or intimidation that leads to terrorism", Dela Rosa said.

But Dela Rosa said the gunman "would have shot at people or triggered a bomb" had he been a terrorist.

Authorities suspect the man was trying to rob the casino at Resorts World Manila, a complex of hotels, restaurants, stores and a multi-floor gambling area.

Gen. Ronald Dela Rosa said one gunman is believed to be behind the attack early Friday and is still at large. But Dela Rosa says the assailant did not fire at people he met.

As news of the attack had spread, President Donald Trump offered the thoughts and prayers of the American people to the Philippines. It is really sad with what's going on throughout the world with terror.

But that was quickly rejected by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, who said all the evidence pointed to an attempt to steal casino chips.

"Some hotel guests said someone yelled "ISIS"," Maricel Navaro, an employee of Resorts World, told DZMM radio. All terminals at nearby Ninoy Aquino International Airport were also locked down because of the attack.
