Pennsylvania lawmakers leery of Trump pulling U.S. from global climate pact

Trump makes G-7 deal on trade, takes rain check on climate

Trump, who has expressed his doubts about climate change being man-made in the past and made a campaign pledge to "cancel" the 2015 Paris Agreement, has so far postponed a decision on whether to stick to or abandon the global deal.

If the United States were to pull out of the accord, it would join Syria and Nicaragua as three out of the 145 countries that have signed on to the 2015 agreement sponsored by the United Nations to slow climate change.

Trump's chief economic adviser, Gary Cohn, has discussed the possibility of changing the US carbon reduction targets instead of pulling out of the deal completely. It is impossible for us to expect our partners to honor their commitments if the United States can not live up to our own.

Last week in Germany, McKenna met Chinese special envoy for climate change Xie Zhenhua and European Union environment commissioner Karmenu Vella and discussed jointly hosting a meeting of environment ministers this fall to chart a path for implementing Paris among the world's major economies.

Lewis pointed out that Trump ran as a deal maker who promised to put American priorities above all others, and also notes that Obama's climate agenda would have caused six million Americans to lose their jobs if we were to see it through. USA inaction on greenhouse gases may eventually discourage other countries from continuing their own efforts to cut back, said Oppenheimer at Princeton.

Longer term, the impact of a USA withdraw depends on how other countries and investors respond.

Apple debuts HomePod speaker to bring Siri into living room
Apple's entry could change this, as it did for digital-music sales, with iTunes, or the smartphone market with the iPhone. The HomePod will be priced at $349, more expensive than Amazon's $180 Echo or $50 Dot and Google's $129 Home.

Musk said he will have "no choice" but to depart the councils if Trump makes the decision.

Musk said: "I've done all I can to advise directly" to Trump and through others in the White House.

"These countries are committed", he said.

Top White House aides were divided and Trump's decision may not be entirely clear-cut.

Scientists say Earth is likely to reach more unsafe levels of warming sooner as a result of the president's decision because America's pollution contributes so much to rising temperatures. "Part of what keeps us going is that America's word is good, and that you stand with your prior administration whether it was of your party or not", she said. The U.S. has agreed to reduce its emissions by 2025 to 26 per cent to 28 per cent of 2005 levels - about 1.6 billion tons.

There have been influential voices urging Trump not to ditch the Paris accord. South Africa's government calls the USA pullout "an abdication of global responsibility".

Seven nations isolate Qatar for supporting terrorism
The move to isoloate Qatar has sparked fears of widespread travel disruption, with flights among the most seriously affected. In March 2014, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain recalled their ambassadors from Qatar over that rift.

Almost 200 nations, including the United States under President Barack Obama's administration, agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to combat climate change.

During Trump's foreign trip that included a stop at the Vatican, Pope Francis gave Trump a copy of his encyclical on climate change and, according to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the cardinal secretary of state "encourag [ed] continued participation in the Paris accord". That promise helped rally supporters sharing his scepticism of global efforts to police US carbon emissions. On the contrary, Trump has placed the money to be made in fossil fuels above all environmental goals, dismantling long-established rules and regulations in order to do so.

But the official says there may be "caveats in the language" that Trump uses to announce the withdrawal - leaving open the possibility that the decision isn't final.

The deal relies heavily on reductions in emissions by big polluter nations, and the United States is the world's second-biggest carbon dioxide emitter behind China.

But House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California called it "a stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet's future".

Once in power, Trump and Pruitt have moved to delay or roll back federal regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions while pledging to revive long-struggling USA coal mines.

Seahawks add depth at quarterback by signing Austin Davis
The Seahawks signed former Rams quarterback Austin Davis today, presumably eschewing the services of Colin Kaepernick. So, despite more than half the teams in the league needing a better quarterback, Kaepernick is still unemployed.

America's worldwide allies and Trump's domestic opponents lashed out Wednesday at media reports that he had made up his mind to pull the United States out of the global accord to curb carbon emissions, a move that would make the deal less effective.
