Ostapenko, an unseeded 19-year-old from Latvia, displayed unbridled joy after using the go-for-it strokes of someone too bold to know better to beat former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the French Open on a rainy Tuesday.

"To play semi-final of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice".

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's French Open quarter-finals will instead be held today after yesterday's torrential rain in Paris.

The Latvian is the first teenager to reach the French Open semi-finals since 2007 when Serbia's Ana Ivanovic pulled off the feat.

"I have to change something compared to the last matches", Thiem, the youngest of the quarterfinalists, said.

The 19-year-old bounced back from some sloppy play in the first set and dealt with the rain delays far better than her more experienced opponent.

Judge will decide fate in Michelle Carter trial
Is it a crime to tell someone to commit suicide? She has asked a judge to rule on the case , rather than a jury of her peers. Roy and Carter spoke to each other via text leading up to the suicide and spoke on the phone as Roy sat in the truck dying.

"It was really hard because we had all the seasons rolled into one today", Bacsinszky said.

Timea Bacsinszky will take on Jelena Ostapenko in the last-four at Roland Garros after respective wins over Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

"Caroline was playing pretty well today, and at the beginning it was really windy and was really tough for me to get my game, because I couldn't expect where the ball was bouncing".

Introduced to tennis at the age of 5 by her mother, Jelena Jakovleva, Ostapenko was a ballroom dancer for seven years before she opted for tennis.

Approaching risky weather prompted chair umpire Carlos Ramos to suspend play after 20 minutes with Bacsinszky serving at 4-3, love-15. "Yeah, I'm going to enjoy it, but I will have plans after the tournament".

Chants of "Kiki-Kiki-Kiki" resonated around Court Philippe-Chatrier on Tuesday, but the echoes of that support are all that remain of France's big hope for a French Open champion.

"It's the tournament closest to my heart", Bacsinszky said.

Wozniacki of Denmark won the first set but couldn't match Ostapenko's style of play over the final two sets.

The teen will play against 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in the semifinals at Roland Garros. Both players struggled to hold serve but, leading 5-4, Bacsinszky fired down an ace to seal the set against the local favourite.

Thirteenth seed Mladenovic had been hoping to become the first French champion since Mary Pierce in 2000, but never really clicked on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Mladenovic, bidding to be the first Frenchwoman in the semi-finals since Marion Bartoli in 2011, was broken in her first service game by Bacsinszky before she levelled at 2-2.

Against Wozniacki, Ostapenko played with a maturity beyond her years.

The Saudis have also closed their land border with Qatar and others have blocked access to airspace around the Gulf country.

- The players are off and covers are on as rain interrupted both the quarter-final matches.
