California Department of Public Health Warns People of the Risks of Salmonella Infection Associated With Contact With Live Poultry as Fifteen Counties Report Infections

The Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services confirmed on Monday that 14 people in 11 counties across the state have been diagnosed recently with Salmonella after coming in contact with live poultry.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 372 people in 47 states nationwide since the start of the year have been infected with various salmonella strains linked to live poultry contact, with 36 percent of the cases involving children under 5 years old.

The CDC says germs from a variety of birds can cause illnesses ranging from skin infections to serious illnesses that can cause death. Food-workers who do not wash their hands properly clean cooking surfaces or thoroughly cook animal products can spread the infection.

Apple Unveils The New iMac Pro
The tech titan has reportedly been working on a customised ARM processor that enhances the low power features of the notebook. Despite the impressive changes to the hardware, what's more intriguing about the new iPad Pro tablets is what's inside them.

In 2016, a record 895 people came down with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, cramps, and fevers - three people died as a result of Salmonella after contact with chickens. In about a week, patients usually recover from the disease, but sometimes the infection might be more severe and, then, it requires hospitalization.

The outbreak could be tied to other states. Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to be affected.

In Montana, people associated with the outbreak have reported obtaining live baby poultry, such as chicks and ducklings, from feed supply stores and relatives.

While that's terrible for people, it's worth noting that the birds infected appear perfectly healthy. Adults should prevent young children from handling chickens and ducks, and supervise hand-washing for older children.

The CDC discourages eating or drinking around chickens and ducks, and also opposes allowing them into the home - especially the bathroom and kitchen.
