12 killed in Iran parliament siege and shrine attack

At least 13 people died in the twin attacks by militants against Iran's parliament and Imam Khomeini Shrine in capital Tehran on Wednesday, the security deputy of Iran's Interior Ministry was quoted as saying by state IRIB TV.

The Islamic State, a Sunni jihadist group, claimed responsibility for both the attacks in the Shia majority nation, media reports said.

Police secure the scene around of shrine of late Iranian revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, after an assault by several attackers in Tehran, Iran, June 7, 2017.

State television described the shrine attackers as "terrorists" and said one had carried out a suicide bombing, without providing further details.

But the BBC reported that only one security guard was killed in Parliament. A third attack was foiled, Iran's Intelligence Ministry said.

Arvidsson had not scored a goal since an empty netter in Game 4 against Chicago that finished a sweep of the Blackhawks. Police estimated more than 50,000 turned out for the first Stanley Cup Final game in Tennessee on Saturday night.

The Islamic State has no following in Iran but has stepped up its Farsi language propaganda in a bid to woo the country's Sunni minority. Iran's regional rival, Saudi Arabia, along with other Sunni Gulf countries, severed ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing the country of backing Iran. The attackers killed seven people and wounded several others, Tasmin said.

Terrorists entered the Parliament building while they had dressed as women, said a security official.

"This is a minor issue but reveals that the terrorists pursue trouble-making".

"Some coward terrorists infiltrated one of the buildings of Parliament".

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani called the attacks a cowardly act.

Iran has also come under attack in the past by Arab insurgents.

Ali Khalili of the Khomeini Mausoleum told IRNA that there were at least three, possibly four, attackers who opened fire on the tomb, and one of them detonated himself at the entrance. "We will remain, God willing".

This is the first time ISIS has attacked Iran.

The timing of the attacks, shortly after a presidential election in Iran, may indicate that the perpetrators want to cast doubt on the decision of the Iranian people to give President Hassan Rouhani a second term, Middle East expert Catherine Shakdam told RT.

The Islamic State group has often urged its fighters to attack Iranian targets and lambasted "heretic" Shiite Iran for helping the Syrian and Iraqi governments battle IS, which considers Shiites to be infidels.
