Moscow: 'Zero' evidence Russian hackers involved in Qatar crisis

Trump made the comments on Twitter after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, and several other countries cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday over allegations that Doha is sponsoring terrorism and destabilizing the region.

Qatar's foreign minister called the move by Gulf countries to sever ties with the nation a "collective punishment", according to a statement posted on the foreign ministry's website Wednesday.

Senegal's neighbour Mauritania, a member of the Arab League, severed ties with Qatar on Tuesday while Gabon also condemned it.

The split among the Arab states erupted last month after US President Donald Trump visited Saudi Arabia where he accused Iran of "destabilizing interventions" in Arab lands.

Just hours after Trump appeared to criticize Qatar for supporting terrorism Tuesday, Secretary of Defence James Mattis spoke with his Qatari counterpart. A number of countries said they would take measures, such as cut air and sea traffic, suspend banking transactions, eject Qatari diplomats and order Qatari citizens to leave.

Gargash said Qatar "absolutely" should expel members of Hamas, stop its support of terror groups "with al-Qaida DNA" around the world and rein in the many media outlets it funds, chief among them the Doha-based satellite news network Al-Jazeera.

Gargash said the scope of Qatar's sheltering of extremists has widened since 2014, when concern was largely focused on Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, a senior Egyptian cleric viewed as the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.
