Trump condemns terrors attack in Iran

UNITED NATIONS United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned on Wednesday an attack by suicide bombers and gunmen on the Iranian parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran that killed at least 12 people. The so-called Islamic State group (IS) has claimed it carried out the attacks, which would be a first in Iran.

An Associated Press reporter saw several police snipers on the rooftops of buildings around the parliament.

"Deputy Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaqari said that the terrorists had entered the parliament in [women's] dress", Iran's state news agency reports.

State TV reported four attackers are involved in the parliament attack, and said eight people were wounded.

Shops in the area were shuttered, and gunfire could be heard.

The unusual attacks in Iran prompted the Interior Ministry to call for an urgent security meeting, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

"I was inside the parliament when shooting happened".

Iran is deeply involved in the fight against ISIS, both in Iraq and Syria, and together with Russian Federation is a major backer of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It said one of the attackers at the shrine was killed by security guards and that a woman was arrested.

Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly denounced the terror attacks on Iran's parliament and the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, vowing aid in the fight against global terrorism. IRIB said that one of the attackers exploded a suicide vest inside the building, though other local news agencies said the explosion may have been caused by grenades thrown by the attackers.

An Associated Press reporter saw security forces, some uniformed and others in plainclothes, around the large and ornate shrine located just outside the capital.

The IS group often claims attacks around the world, even when links to the group can not be confirmed and appear dubious.

"We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times", Trump said in a statement.

The second attack, at the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, came within an hour of the assault on the legislature. Officials at one point urged people to avoid using public transportation until further notice.
