Trump to nominate Christopher Wray as new FBI director

In this November 4, 2003 file photo, Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wray, speaks at the news conference at the Justice Department in Washington.

In an early morning two-sentence tweet, Trump said he meant to nominate Christopher Wray, a high-ranking official in George W. Bush's Justice Department who represented New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in the Bridgegate scandal. After he left, he went to the private law firm King & Spalding, where he now represents major corporations in conflicts with the feds.

Wray formerly oversaw the Justice Department's criminal division in the George W. Bush administration.

Wray represented Chris Christie during the "bridgegate" trial, in which members of Christie's team were found guilty of shutting down key traffic lanes on the George Washington Bridge in 2013, causing widespread delays and other problems, a move that was soon found to be about political vengeance rather than any actual practical concern.

Trump also this week criticized the department - which, as president, is under his purview - over his travel ban, tweeting that "the Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted" to the Supreme Court.

In other news, insider Robin Allan sold 27,677 shares of the stock in a transaction that occurred on Thursday, March 23rd. Liberum Capital's target price would indicate a potential downside of 13.35% from the company's previous close.

To earn trust among the rank and file of the FBI, Ruskin said, Wray must show support for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into ties between the Trump White House and the Kremlin. Trump also brought on Christie's former aide Matt Mowers as a campaign director in battleground states during the 2016 presidential race.

The president met last week with candidates for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director post, including Wray, according to White House spokesman Sean Spicer.

Trump's announcement comes just one day before former FBI director James Comey is expected to testify in front of Congress on allegations that the president tried to shut down an investigation into his ties to Russian Federation.

Trump described Wray as "a man of impeccable credentials" in a tweet on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump announced Wray as his pick early Wednesday. Some Democratic lawmakers said the president's timing seemed created to distract from Comey's testimony and other congressional testimony on Wednesday.

Despite the mounting legal questions now shadowing the White House, Trump has needled Comey publicly.

Early in his career, Wray, a 1992 graduate from Yale Law School, was an assistant USA attorney in Georgia.

"Chris is a wonderful choice to lead the FBI who cares deeply about the institution and already has strong relationships with the FBI", Fisher said.
