After the result was declared, she tweeted: "Fantastic in Moray!" The SNP also held Kilmarnock and Loudoun; Falkirk; East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow; and Dunbartonshire West.

The Conservatives took several SNP seats in a dramatic general election which sees the United Kingdom heading for a hung parliament.

The First Minister said the election had been a "disaster" for May, but admitted that it had been a "disappointing" night for her party.

Mr Salmond said: "Gordon is the most unbelievable and diverse constituency in the whole of Scotland and I wish you well in representing it Colin".

Scottish Labour has also made gains from the SNP in Glasgow North-East, Rutherglen, Midlothian, East Lothian, Coatbridge, Kirkcaldy as well as returning an increased majority in Edinburgh South.

Pollsters project Macron on course to dominate parliament
Polling agencies project that Mr Macron's party will win a large majority in the second round June 18. She also slammed the electoral system as unfavorable to smaller parties like hers.

A Survation telephone poll for the Record, which backed Labour in the election, put the SNP at its lowest level since September 214, down to 39%, while Scottish Labour scored a remarkable 29%, its highest in more than two years, and the Tories were on 26%. Those suggested the SNP would lose about 12 constituencies, although senior figures were braced for the loss of 15 seats.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale told BBC Scotland that although only a few results were in, "the reality is the SNP vote is crumbling in their urban heartlands".

While the Tories came away with 13 seats in Scotland, in England they fared far worse, losing at least 21 seats, leaving them on course to pick up a total of 319 - down by 11 overall.

"I'm disappointed that we have lost so many fine parliamentary colleagues, I think one thing the polls did not detect at all was a late recovery in Labour Party fortune based on the admiration of a lot of people for the performance of Jeremy Corbyn during this General Election campaign".

"The SNP has won this election in Scotland, it will be our second best ever result in a Westminster election".

Gerard Killen claimed the seat for Jeremy Corbyn's party with 19,101 votes, defeating the SNP's Margaret Ferrier, who won the constituency in 2015 but who polled 18,836 votes this time round.

There were several reassuring victories but with a reduced share of the vote for Sturgeon, with Mhairi Black holding Paisley and Renfrewshire South.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd is also in danger of losing her seat in Hastings.

He was returned to the Commons after securing just 21 more votes than Conservative MEP Ian Duncan.
