Jelena Ostapenko v Timea Bacsinszky - player profiles

It is the second time that Bacsinszky has made it to the semis here.

Daily local news headlines from across Gwinnett County.

Unseeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko became the first teenager to reach the French Open women's semi-finals since 2007 with a shock win against former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Before this, she had never been beyond the third round at a major.

Djokovic has been struggling for consistency and the 23-year-old Thiem is expected to provide a tough challenge even if the Austrian has won only one set in their five previous encounters.

Ostapenko, 19, recovered from 2-1 down in the final set to eventually breeze past her opponent, serving out to love to seal her passage to the last four.

At times during a match of 16 service breaks the impetuosity of youth betrayed her as she seemed on the verge of youthful tantrums in the hot sunshine, especially when she lost four games in a row to lose the second set.

The Latvian faces Swiss 30th seed and friend Timea Bacsinszky, through to a second semi-final in three years, for a place in Saturday's final.

Bacsinszky downed French hope Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4 on a rain-hit day at Roland Garros, while 19-year-old Ostapenko stunned Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

She finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth game, though, as her aggressive game clicked and she began to boss the rallies with a whippy forehand that Wozniacki could not read. She broke on the third time of asking in the seventh game and after saving a pair of set points on her own serve, broke when the former world #1 netted a backhand to pull back the entire deficit.

After a more than three-hour rain interruption, play lasted about 20 minutes before covers were put back over the clay courts.

But then the rains came in again, disrupting both players, delaying the men's quarterfinals and forcing the match into two subsequent restarts before Bacsinszky finally claimed victory.

Caroline Wozniacki was a former world No1, twice a runner-up at the USA open, but playing her first French Open quarter-final since she was a teenager in 2010. "We had a hurricane, a sandstorm, and we nearly had snow, too", Bacsinszky told the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier.

But there was disappointment at Roland Garros for home favourite Kristina Mladenovic whose run was brought to an end. "I think it's pretty cool..." And I'm still doing it now just for myself, the dancing.

The winners were flying off of Ostapenko's racket on almost every point, Wozniacki with no answer to her opponent's sensational performance.

"It will be great to celebrate playing tennis here", said Ostapenko, the first teenager since Serb Ana Ivanovic in 2008 to reach the last four in Roland Garros. So, who will make their birthday more memorable?

Donald Young and Santiago Gonzalez are through to the men's doubles final at the French Open. A flustered announcer quickly tried to defuse the situation by promising a full ticket refund after just under two hours of action was possible.

Once play resumed, she got the job done, though, and was narrowly denied an early break in the decider, with Wozniacki holding firm - moments before a second rain delay.
