In the wake of the weekend's terror attacks in London U.S. President Donald Trump stumbled into yet another controversy when he criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Trump slammed Khan again over his "pathetic excuse" later on, and it has prompted criticism for misrepresenting the mayor's words and for attacking an American ally while it is dealing with a national tragedy. "I've been clear that we have a special relationship with the United States of America, it's very important we have a close relationship, it takes two to tango", he told ITV on Tuesday morning. "Mr. Trump may find himself running an administration with no one but his family and the Breitbart staff. People of talent won't work for a boss who undermines them in public without thinking about the consequences", the Journal piece said.

Trump also said the mainstream media was spinning the story on the mayor's behalf and implied Khan, one of the only Muslim mayors of a major Western city, had to come up with an explanation for his comments after the event.

Almost two million people signed an online petition seeking to stop Trump making a state visit after he was invited during Prime Minister Theresa May's trip to the USA in January.

The White House was asked by reporters late Monday if Trump was targeting Khan because he is Muslim.

More than 1.8 million people have signed an online petition saying Trump should not make the state visit as it "could cause embarrassment" to the monarch. "I just don't have the time to respond to tweets from Donald Trump".

'Look, I think that the point is, is there is a reason to be alarmed, ' Huckabee Sanders replied.

Trump has drawn harsh criticism for taking a dig at Khan in the aftermath of Saturday's attack, and May's remarks add strength to the argument that he crossed a line with his apparent critique of the mayor Sunday.
