Qld reassures unit residents after United Kingdom fire

The blaze engulfed the 24-storey building with 200 firefighters attending the scene.

And Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, described the blaze as a "major incident".

"This is going to be a long and complex recovery operation and I do anticipate that the number of fatalities will sadly increase beyond those 12", he said.

Following the massive and fast-spreading fire at Grenfell Tower in west London, in which at least six people have died, some fire safety experts have suggested that delays to the regulations could have made such tower blocks more deadly in a fire.

A community action group have said their warnings fell on "deaf ears" after highlighting safety concerns about Grenfell Tower, which was ravaged by fire yesterday.

"I believe some low-rises can still be un-sprinklered, but the vast majority of our buildings are sprinklered." he said.

"I saw people jumping out of their windows", Khadejah Miller, who was evacuated from her home nearby, said.

More than 20 people are in critical condition in hospital with some 70 admitted to various hospitals in the London area.

The building is the Grenfell Tower in west London.

Nick Paget-Brown, who leads the borough council, told Sky News that he had toured the building last May after it was reopened following the renovation.

"What we can simply do is look to all that we have seen today which is good, which is fabulous - people getting together".

A blog post from Grenfell Action Group in November said "only a catastrophic event" would expose the concerns residents had. Grefnell Tower, which is located in a poverty-stricken pocket of one of London's poshest neighborhoods, was engulfed within minutes, said locals.

"Around midnight the fire was only around the third floor and then, before you know it, the whole 23 (sic) floors of the building were all on fire and there were people screaming for help and throwing kids out".

"I'm really not in any position to answer any questions about the structure", he said. "In my 29 years of being a firefighter I have never ever seen anything of this scale".

Society of Fire Protection Engineers vice president Michael James says it means ACM cladding with a polyethylene core would not be used on buildings taller than seven metres now.

Reuters was unable to verify the witness accounts.

Witnesses reported seeing a baby thrown out a window to safety to avoid the horror inside.

Tamara, one witness, told the BBC: "There's people, like, throwing their kids out: 'Just save my children, just save my children!'".

Local councillor Judith Blakeman, who lives opposite the tower, rushed outside when she heard about the blaze at 5am.

"People were starting to appear at the windows, frantically banging and screaming", Lamrani said, adding the woman gestured that she wanted to drop a baby. "We will cooperate with the relevant authorities and emergency services and fully support their enquiries into the causes of this fire at the appropriate time", the company said in a statement.

"I have lived here nearly 21 years and I have never seen anything like this, at first I thought it was terrorism, we were just panicking". Justice has to be done.

He said: "There are times when all the words we can say are not adequate and sometimes words fail us because no words can do justice to how we feel, or what we have seen or what has happened".

"Love love love London people from all walks donating and helping".
