Suspect in Congressional shooting identified, has died from injuries

Senator Bernie Sanders, for whom Hodgkinson apparently campaigned in 2016, issued a statement after news of the shootings broke Wednesday and reports began being published that Hodgkinson had been an active Sanders supporter.

An acquaintance of the man who shot at a Republican baseball practice on Wednesday morning said he was "shocked" to hear about the incident. "Let me clearly state here that I do not agree at all with ANY Violence".

Five people were injured in the shooting in Virginia including Republican Steve Scalise, who is the whip for the Republican party in the House of Representatives. "I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm".

Federal law enforcement sources have identified to CNN the alleged shooter as James Hodgkinson, 66, of IL.

The Washington Post reported that Hodgkinson campaigned for Bernie Sanders during his run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. President.

But the Alexandria shooting is a prime example of why we actually need less. "It seems like today, anything can happen", he said. He appeared to be referring to Representative Brad Wenstrup, an Ohio Republican who is also a doctor and an Army Reserve officer.

A portrait of Sanders, the Independent senator from Vermont and the first Jewish candidate to win major nominating contests in a presidential primary season when he vied a year ago for the Democratic presidential nod, is the background photo on Hodgkinson's Facebook page.

Hodgkinson allegedly opened fire on a group of GOP lawmakers and aides practicing for Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, Virginia, early Wednesday.

Hodgkinson, 66, is from Belleville, Illinois, according to authorities.

All charges against him were dismissed, however.

A bystander with a cellphone camera happened to be recording at the time the first shots started, and captured the event. Brad Wenstrup, an army veteran, later told an aide the shooting was "like being in Iraq again, only without his weapon".

Conservatives immediately seized on Hodgkinson's support for Sanders, with commentator Ann Coulter, a frequent voice on conservative cable news and talk radio, describing the gunman as "some nut Bernie Sanders supporter".

JBN discovered an additional Hodgkinson Facebook page with many politically charged posts against Donald Trump some of which compared Trump to a Nazi ruler. Another said: "Trump is a mean, disgusting person".

"He didn't say anything. he was just shooting", said Peoples, who was about to teach an exercise class at a nearby YMCA.

Police said Hodgkinson had also been "observed throwing" his own daughter "around the bedroom" in his house.

"My view of him was just quick behind the dugout, and then when I realized he had a line of sight into the dugout with all the members there then we obviously went back down quickly", Flake said.

Meanwhile, Michael, Hodgkinson's brother, said he was angry over the election of Trump and travelled to Washington to protest. Posts from past year show he was adamantly opposed to Clinton, and, after the election, to President Donald Trump .
