WaPo: Special Counsel Investigating Whether Trump Tried To Obstruct Justice

Comey had told Congress that the FBI was investigating possible links between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government, which USA intelligence agencies accuse of hacking the Democratic National Committee's emails past year in a bid to influence the election against Hillary Clinton.

Sessions became visibly angry when asked about former FBI Director James Comey's testimony last week that aspects of the attorney general's recusal were problematic.

Testifying publicly before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, Sessions also denied he had a third meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 campaign. He said he never met with, or had conversations with, Russians about election interference.

-The most interesting parts of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Tuesday testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence may have been the questions he didn't answer.

Sen. Mark Warner, D., Va., asked the attorney general if he had confidence in former FBI Director Robert Mueller's appointment as special counsel to probe whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Suspect in Congressional shooting identified, has died from injuries
The Washington Post reported that Hodgkinson campaigned for Bernie Sanders during his run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Federal law enforcement sources have identified to CNN the alleged shooter as James Hodgkinson , 66, of IL .

Sessions' testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. (1830 GMT), keeps the political spotlight on the Russian Federation issue, sidelining President Donald Trump's domestic agenda. But many Democrats seem very frustrated by his refusal to answer questions about conversations with the president. "That is false", Sessions said.

Sessions is the first USA senator to show public support for Trump's campaign.

Comey referred frequently to the attorney general and included the tantalizing tidbit that there were "facts that I can't discuss in an open setting". Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) during the Senate hearing, as the latter interrupted Sessions several times to press him on his responses and ask follow-up questions.

Warner asked Sessions if he was evoking executive privilege. Sessions said of that moment: "He was concerned about it, and his recollection of what he said to me about this concern is consistent with my recollection".

Sessions testified that the first time he heard about meetings he held with Russian officials came from a news reporter who contacted his office in March.

How the congressional shooting unfolded
They attended to a wounded staff member who had been shot in the leg, he said, and then laid back down in the dugout. Mike Doyle, a Pennsylvania Democrat, echoed Jenkins' words at a Wednesday press conference.

In his opening remarks, Sessions cited Justice Department's "longstanding policy" and insisted it was his duty to "protect confidential communications with the President".

Earlier, Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., asked Sessions why, after recusing himself from the Russian Federation inquiry, he signed a letter last month recommending that President Trump fire Comey.

The details of a February 14 Oval Office meeting, where Sessions and other top aides left the room and Trump talked to Comey alone.

The former Republican U.S. senator, an early supporter of Trump's presidential campaign, will likely have to explain why he told lawmakers in January that he had no dealings with Russian officials a year ago. But: Sessions also said he thought Comey should be fired. Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation in March after the revelations of the two Kislyak meetings. Indeed, this is what both the Senate investigation and the special counsel investigation, headed by Robert Mueller, are supposed to suss out. But under questioning, Sessions acknowledged that Trump's campaign foreign policy advisers "never functioned as a coherent team" and there were members of that group he never met. Asked whether he would ever take any action to remove Mueller, Sessions said, "I would not think that would be appropriate for me to do". Comey's decision to announce a year ago that Clinton would not be prosecuted over her emails was a "usurpation" of the Justice Department's authority, Sessions said.
