Jury deadlocked in Bill Cosby sex assault trial; judge tells them to keep working

After four days of deliberating, jurors in Bill Cosby's trial said they are deadlocked and can not come to a unanimous decision on any of the three charges against the comedian.

The jury tells the judge that "it can not come to a unanimous consensus on any of the counts".

"I am required to read you an instruction". If the jury tells the judge they are deadlocked, he will have considerable flexibility under Pennsylvania law in how to respond.

"I'm fine with (the deadlock) as long as it leads to an acquittal", said Black, adding he believed the trial was "a sham".

Bill Cosby arrives at the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Norristown, Pa.

Deliberations began Monday night after a rapid six days of testimony and closing arguments. They were bused in from Allegheny County near Pittsburgh and have been sequestered in a hotel for the trial.

The disgraced comedian is now awaiting a final verdict as a 12-person jury deliberates on whether he will be found guilty of three counts of criminal indecent assault against Andrea Constand, who claims she was sexually molested by Cosby in 2004.

Bradford Cohen, a Florida criminal defense attorney, said lengthy deliberations are common during highly technical cases with numerous counts and defendants as well as copious amounts of evidence.

The sequestered jurors from western Pennsylvania have appeared increasingly exhausted and upset after deliberating late into the night the past three days.

"A quick verdict will not be a good thing for Cosby", says Stuart Slotnick, a NY criminal defense attorney who has been following the case for more than two years.

As he described reaching into Constand's trousers, Cosby testified, "I go into the area that is somewhere between permission and rejection".

Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial, Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Norristown, Pa.

Cosby is charged with drugging and molesting a woman in his Philadelphia-area home in 2004. Each carries a maximum 10-year prison term, though the counts could be merged at sentencing if he is convicted. Johnson told jurors Cosby sexually assaulted her in strikingly similar fashion in 1996. It was at Temple she met Cosby, a member of the board of trustees.

"Your friends", Cosby said he told her. "You have taken your task so seriously".

She woke up hours later in the back of her vehicle with her clothing disheveled and her bra undone, she said.

She woke up on the couch early in the morning with her clothes disheveled, she said.

The GOP team had been particularly upbeat, having finally won the contest previous year after a long losing streak. There was no immediate word from the baseball game's promoter on if it would be postponed in light of the attack.

"I will not set any specific time for deliberations", he said. "Let's let that elder gentleman go home".

Cosby lowered and shook his head in the courtroom as she spoke.

Constand testified she was paralyzed by the pills and unable to fight Cosby off.

The supporters are holding signs like "Free Mr. Cosby Now".

"Each of you has a duty to consult with one another and to deliberate with a view to reaching an agreement", he said, sending them back into deliberations. "Who knows. I'm glad the judge it telling them to go back and play fair", accuser Beth Ferrier told the Daily News by phone after hearing the news.

Bill Cosby's spokesman says a jury's struggle to reach a verdict in the comedian's sexual assault trial shows it has doubts about the accuser's story. "It was a lot of confusion putting a lot of dates together".

Cosby's defense team argues that the encounter was consensual and "romantic", while prosecutors say it was one assault within a larger pattern of drugging and sexually assaulting women.

Constand initially told police about the alleged assault in January 2005, a year after she says it took place.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office confirmed to NBC10 Philadelphia that the account belongs to Constand and that the shot took place in a secured hallway outside DA Kevin Steele's office. She sued Cosby in a civil suit and settled for an undisclosed amount in 2006. "The bottom line is, Cosby admits to this in his own deposition". The trial began June 5.
