Donald Trump investigated for possible obstruction of justice

In addition to investigating whether or not Donald Trump committed obstruction of justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey, special counsel Robert Mueller is also reportedly investigating "money laundering by Trump associates", the New York Times reports.

According to a report published on Monday, Trump is considering firing special counsel Mueller, who was appointed on May 17 by the Justice Department as special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 United States elections and related matters.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating President Trump for possible obstruction of justice, five people with knowledge of the situation told The Washington Post.

Comey said he believed Trump was trying to get him to drop an investigation of the president's former national security adviser, and that White House officials spread "lies, plain and simple" to cover up the reason for his dismissal.

In a statement issued in response to the report, Trump's personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation of leaking the material to the newspaper and called it "outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

In their story, the Washington Post cited anonymous sources who were briefed on the interview requests by investigators. In this regard, counsel Robert S Mueller III has sought interviews with senior United States intelligence officials.

Comey testified that he thought Trump's request to "let go" of the Flynn probe was "very disturbing.very concerning" and that he expects Mueller will closely examine whether it amounted to an obstruction of justice "offense".

Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the president's requests, officials said.

Comey told Congress last week that he leaked his memos of his conversations Trump to a friend after a tweet by the president suggested he may have taped the conversations.

The Trump administration now refers all requests for comment on the Russian Federation investigation to Trump's outside attorney, Marc Kasowitz.

On Monday, a friend of Trump's, Christopher Ruddy, said the U.S. leader was considering firing special counsel Mueller. a claim later denied by the President's aides. The Post suggests Mr Comey's "carefully worded comments" could mean the investigation into Mr Trump began soon after Mr Comey was sacked.

A spokesman for Mr Mueller's team declined to comment.

Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump's orbit, people familiar with the probe were quoted as saying.

The Justice Department has long held that it would not be appropriate to indict a sitting president.

The emergence of the obstruction of justice inquiry may make it harder for Trump to have Mueller removed.

However, Mr Trump's legal team responded angrily.
