The death toll from the blaze is 17, but that figure is expected rise significantly.

Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade Dany Cotton said sniffer dogs are being used to search for victims but the process could take "weeks".

Fire safety engineers were stunned at how rapidly the fire spread, engulfing the building in less than an hour in the middle of the night and preventing firefighters from reaching many people inside.

Now, following the aftermath of the fire, which is still smouldering, Adele alongside her husband Simon Konecki, who own a house in the Kensington and Chelsea borough, were spotted in the vicinity hugging locals and giving general support.

"We as the police have started an investigation, I mentioned when I was down at the scene this morning that one of our very senior investigating officers is leading that for us", said Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy.

The tragedy also led Prime Minister Theresa May to promise a full investigation.

Muslim residents observing Ramadan have been hailed as heroes after they helped save many sleeping neighbours from the horrific Grenfell Tower fire. Smoke billows from from a high-rise apartment building on fire in London, Wednesday, June 14, 2017. "I'm literally on the other side of the world and I want them to see our lights and to hear us". Salah Chebiouni (45) who escaped from his ninth-floor flat with his wife and two children, said he was in his kitchen when "I saw fire outside my window".

"There is potential for the fire to propagate throughout the system if adequate fire barriers are not installed. the installation of fire barriers at each floor level above the first floor level [i.e. starting with the second story] should be considered", the BRE said in a publication entitled "Fire performance of external thermal insulation for walls of multistory buildings".

The fire brigade said the fire was unprecedented in its scale and the speed of its spread.

More than 200 fire fighters had been tackling the blaze and 12 hours on, the building was still smoking.

Queen Elizabeth said in a message that her thoughts and prayers were with those families who had lost loved ones and with the many people still critically ill in hospital.

Firefighters said they had taken 65 people from the burning building and a total of 74 people were listed as wounded, including 18 who remained in critical condition.

A survey of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders didn't know that pickles - spoiler alert! - are cucumbers. But to a significant portion of Americans, making chocolate milk begins with the color of the cow.

A woman near the scene told reporters: "If it wasn't for all these young Muslim boys around here helping us coming from the mosque, a lot more people would have been dead".

It's also not clear whether people are trapped.

Outside, a poster pleaded for information: "My friend Khadija lives on the 20th floor of the Grenfell Tower we can't get through to her, if anyone had seen her please let me know".

Nassima Boutrig, who lives across from the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well. "We are getting a larger number of high-rise residential buildings".

Resident Hamid Wahbi said that as he fled, he asked about a neighbor's father but was told he was still inside.

But residents had been concerned about safety, and Grenfell Action Group said in a blog post in November "only a catastrophic event" would expose the issues.
