May to meet Northern Ireland parties amid DUP deal concerns

May's Conservative Party, which failed to win a majority in last week's British general election, has been talking to Northern Ireland's largest party, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to secure the support of their 10 members of parliament in Westminster.

Another party source told the Guardian the unionists were seeking to make May's government's policies "more compassionate" across the UK.

"We stand at a critical time with those Brexit negotiations starting only next week - I think that stability is important".

DUP deputy leader, Nigel Dodds, insisted that there is no deadline for a deal between the two parties despite the Queen's Speech, in which the government will set out its priorities, being due on Wednesday.

British Prime Minister Theresa May urged Northern Ireland's political parties on Thursday to reach an agreement to restore government for the province by June 29, or London would need to consider alternative steps.

If a coalition agreement avoids the kind of contentious issues that have fuelled the deepest political crisis in Northern Ireland in a decade, it could convince Sinn Fein to soften its demands and reenter a power-sharing government, analysts on both sides of the sectarian divide speculate.

"She said she will serve us as long as we want her".

While the DUP are deeply euroskeptic, they have balked at some of the practical implications of a so-called hard Brexit - including a potential loss of a "frictionless border" with the Republic of Ireland - and talks will touch on efforts to minimize the potential damage to Northern Ireland. The Evening Standard, edited by ex-Treasury chief George Osborne, reported that Cabinet ministers have initiated talks with Labour lawmakers to come up with a "softer", less hard-line divorce from the EU.

There have also been suggestions the devolution of corporation tax to Northern Ireland could be speeded up as part of the deal, prompting anger from Nationalists who have called for the Scottish Parliament to be given control of business tax receipts.

The stakes for May are high.

Britain entered a sixth day of political limbo on Wednesday with Prime Minister Theresa May yet to seal a deal to prop up her minority government and facing calls to soften her stance on Brexit days before negotiations on leaving the European Union begin.

"My preoccupation is that time is passing, it is passing quicker than anyone believes because the subjects we have to deal with are extraordinarily complex", he added. Michel Barnier warned that no progress had been made in the three months since May triggered Article 50, starting the process of leaving the union. "I can't negotiate with myself".
