Hamilton: Canadian GP "a great blow to Ferrari"

Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton, has finally admitted that their victory at the Grand Prix in Canada is important to their chances of winning a championship this year.

The three-time world champion Briton steered his Mercedes to a fastest time of one minute and 11.459 seconds to outpace nearest rival and world championship leading German Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari by 0.330 seconds. There were some manoeuvres where I almost wanted to close my eyes - but ultimately I think the team and the auto deserved more. "I don't know why Montreal has been so good to me all these years but I love driving this track. We didn't get it, so I'll take fourth".

Charging from the back of the field after a first-lap incident with Max Verstappen sent him to the pits for a new front wing for his auto to finish fourth was points-leader Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. Nonetheless, Vettel is still twelve points ahead of Hamilton and his efforts today may well prove to have been decisive as their tight championship battle develops.

The safety auto came out on the opening lap when, on the first turn, Romain Grosjean's Haas nudged Carlos Sainz's Toro Rosso, which plowed into the side of Stroll's Williams teammate Felipe Massa.

Sir Patrick Stewart conducted the podium interviews before downing champagne from Ricciardo's race boot.

Justin Thomas ties US Open Tournament record with 63 in third round
He loved Erin Hills , a course with wide fairways between the knee-high fescue that he figured would allow him to attack. Moments later, he began a run of five straight birdies that put him right where he wanted to be going into the weekend.

"I was stuck. with Lewis in front, I couldn't really brake any deeper, otherwise I'd push him off, I had Valtteri on the left, and Max then suddenly appearing on the right".

"I wanted to be on the podium in the end", Vettel said.

"I think Mercedes was very strong, but then they had a completely different race", Vettel said. Bit hard to read, I think Mercedes was very strong in the race and it's also a different story when you can control the race, the pace, the tyres. "It's insane to think after 10 years that I enjoy racing every lap just as I did 10 years ago".

"We learnt a lot from Monaco, and we have learnt a lot from this weekend, too", said Hamilton, who is now just 12 points shy of Vettel in the championship.

Lewis Hamilton was at the pole at Montreal on Sunday and planning to give him a tough fight was Sebastian Vettel in second place followed by Bottas in third.

US President Donald Trump publicly acknowledges Russia probe includes him
Democrats and Republicans alike decried President Trump's tweet about the Russian Federation investigation on Capitol Hill Friday. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, invoked Watergate to remind Congress the stakes.

The first lap also saw the horrific crash between Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean, which prompted for the safety vehicle on track.

More crucially, it saw Hamilton - now a six time victor in Montreal - slash his deficit in the standings to Ferrari rival Vettel to just 12 points.

The Star Trek actor was interviewing the smiling Australian before Ricciardo said "I have to do something".

There was also a duel between Force India's Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon after the team as Perez to move for Ocon. Vettel then passed Perez on the penultimate lap for fourth. One of the problems was the wind tunnel gave them one reading and the simulator gave them a different and along with that a mistake in setting up their vehicle which prevented them getting Pirelli's supersoft and ultrasoft tires working in their limited temperature windows.

Pro golf: Steve Stricker makes US Open cut on the number
The ball landed on the front of the green just soft enough that it rolled out 8 feet by the hole. "I'm happy for him". Justin Thomas eagled 18 to get to 9-under 63, matching the major scoring record and breaking Johnny Miller's U.S.
