The Finsbury Park mosque was associated with extremist ideology for several years after the 9/11 attacks in the United States, but was shut down and reorganized.

The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety more than a decade ago for sermons by radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who was sentenced to life in a U.S. prison in January 2015 for his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

"They were very nervous, shouting very loud, trying desperately to make some signs to a police vehicle that was. just passing the road", she told CNN. Eight of the injured were taken to hospitals and the rest were treated at the scene.

The attack comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when people attend prayers at night.

A group of people were helping a man who had collapsed when they were hit by the van just after midnight.

Eight other injured people were taken to hospitals after the crash early Monday morning.

The force also dismissed reports that the van driver produced a knife.

The area of London where a vehicle hit pedestrians early Monday local time is ethnically diverse and home to a large Muslim community. Sky News reported that the mosque's imam prevented the crowd from beating the attacker until police arrived.

Officers were called at 00.20 BST and remain at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said, describing it as a "major incident".
