Bill Cosby mistrial sparks outrage

A recap of what happened Saturday in the Bill Cosby sex assault case, which ended in a mistrial.

Prosecutors said minutes after a judge declared the mistrial on Saturday that they will retry the 79-year-old actor and comedian. Lawyer Brian McMonagle also anxious that some jurors might compromise "their views and their values" for the sake of reaching a unanimous decision.

Former federal prosecutor David Weinstein said Cosby's celebrity nearly certainly played a role in the jury's deliberations, perhaps to convince "two or three jurors that it's impossible to convict Dr. Huxtable, to convict Fat Albert. that he couldn't have done this disgusting thing". As such, the defense may not call him for the second trial if they think he's a loose canon or unreliable. "I'm sorry it's causing everyone frustration, but the law requires that I allow a deliberating jury to continue to deliberate". Other jurors were harder to read. He told them they had to rely on their collective memory. The 2004 encounter at Cosby's suburban Philadelphia estate was the only one in a slew of accusations from scores of women against the entertainer that resulted in criminal charges. In a recent Los Angeles Times piece, comedian/producer Larry Wilmore noted that while some will be able to compartmentalize their view of a comic whose Hall of Fame credentials earned him the title "America's dad", this unsavory chapter "will overshadow his career". Allred, who's attended the trial since day one, said, "It's too early to celebrate". But they may first want to know what issues hung up the jury. Mr Cosby has given a sealed deposition in the case. He said prosecutors felt good about the case, but "there's always tweaks". He claimed the pills were Benadryl, an allergy medication. Prosecutors have suggested he gave her something stronger, possibly quaaludes.

McMonagle objected in court to the panel's repeated requests to review testimony, saying it suggested some jurors were trying to coerce other jurors in an attempt to bring an end to the deadlock. O'Neill instructed them to keep working toward a unanimous decision.

The panel got the case on Monday.

It wasn't immediately known how many jurors wanted to convict and how many wanted to acquit.
