Monday morning the Muslim Welfare House headlined its website with this message: "All of us at Muslim Welfare House sends our thoughts and prayers to the victims and those injured in the major incident at Finsbury Park".

Mobile phone footage taken by one of those who crowded round the police van seems to show the arrested 48-year-old man blowing a kiss at the person recording the video, reported The Independent.

His full statement said: "I am shocked by this horrific and cruel attack in Finsbury Park, which is being treated as an act of terror". The elderly man died at the scene, but it wasn't immediately clear whether he received additional injuries from the van or if his medical treatment was cut short by the incident. Sadly, he has died.

"This morning, our country woke to news of another terrorist attack on the streets of our capital city".

Ms May said the attack was "every bit as sickening as those which have come before".

The mosques' worshippers, mainly from North and West Africa, had just left special prayers during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. London police are investigating it as a terrorist incident.

The video, shot by a man passing by a couple of minutes after the attack happened, shows the chaos at the scene as people tended to the injured until the emergency services arrived.

Men pray after a vehicle collided with pedestrians near a mosque in the Finsbury Park neighborhood of North London, Britain June 19, 2017. A man was inside in the van, I saw with my eye, and the old man was also on the ground, and I see some people were also injured.

"At that moment in time, basically a van swerved into them deliberately", he said, citing a witness at the scene.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said the attack was "an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect". He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The man's name was not released.

The eight injured were taken to hospital; two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said in a statement . Mrs Cox's widow Brendan Cox tweeted: "When Islamist terrorists attack , we rightly seek out hate preachers who spur them on.

He is said to have told the gathering crowd: "Do not touch him". Some in the area had tried to attack the man, but were fended off by those holding him and an imam from the mosque.

"This big van just came and went all over us", Saleh Alamoudi said, who watched the incident unfold first-hand.

Meanwhile, in the USA, another attacker accomplished just that.

At one point a girl gets people to move a motorbike which is "leaking", possibly after being hit by the van.

The local Imam is being praised for protecting the attacker.
