But at the same time, I don't feel as though I lost a golf tournament.

That earned him automatic promotion to the European Tour, where he then won the Turkish Airlines Challenge in Belek at the end of the following season.

Several of his peers and the world of golf took to twitter to celebrate his first major win.

The fast-moving Koepka captured the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open but despite often putting himself in contention, the wins did not continue to flow and from 21 top-10 finishes on the US -based tour, he only had the one victory.

Koepka's winning total of 16-under equals the lowest score to par for a US Open, matching Rory McIlroy's victory at Congressional in 2011 on a par-71 layout.

Justin Thomas, coming off a 9-under 63 that matched the major championship scoring record and was the first 9-under round at a U.S. Open, went out in 39 and closed with a 75 to tie for ninth. "To finish in double digits, under par at a major championship, especially the U.S. Open, it was a good week". Between conversations I've had with Claude [Harmon III] and Pete Cowan sat me down, I think, on Tuesday, and kind of had a conversation with me just kind of staying patient, not trying to win. Hopefully though, in future majors I can play in the last or next to last group to give myself a better chance.

It also marks the seventh consecutive major that has crowned a first time victor.

Co-operative Bank in 'advanced' talks over rescue package
Meanwhile, the bank said that as well as exploring potential recapitalisation it was also proceeding with its sale process. A further update, will be made "when appropriate", according to the Co-op.

"I played two good rounds, but it wasn't enough", Matsuyama said of his Open campaign. "No regrets, I did play well".

"I'm looking forward to my shot at it, I know it's not going to be an easy day, for sure", Fowler said.

"It would be a lot of fun to see this place firm and fast", Fowler said. They're all under the age of 30.

"I mean, you've got to tip your cap. You can't ask for much more".

With athleticism and power, and four straight putts over the back nine that allowed him to pull away, Koepka capped off his hardscrabble journey around the world and found stardom at home as the U.S. Open champion.

It all came together this week for the talented Koepka, who said he practiced patience and it paid off.

And yet, the runner-up finish was his fourth top-five finish in his past five starts, including a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Gunfire at Mali resort area popular with foreigners
In March the same year, a grenade and gun attack on La Terrasse nightclub in Bamako killed five people, including foreigners. In a video released in March, jihadis said those two were joining together along with two Mali-based terror groups.

"It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days", said Koepka.

"I felt like that has been the thing lately with me, why I haven't really played that well, I've been trying to win so badly".

"I don't believe in moral victories, " said Harman, 30, a two-time victor on the PGA Tour who was playing in just his eighth major championship. The following day, Koepka won the tournament, and the day after that Koepka qualified for the British Open.

Three quick wins in Spain, Italy and Scotland earned him automatic entry to the European Tour, where he won in Turkey in 2014. Then a couple things go the other way and maybe he doesn't win and finishes fourth or fifth like he has a couple times.

A fan ran up to Koepka with a flag for him to sign.

"It was a long phone call for us - it was like two minutes", Koepka said.
