Ed Gillespie narrowly wins GOP primary for Governor

However, conservative challenger Corey Stewart, the chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and a staunch supporter of President Trump, has pulled within less than 1 percent of Gillespie with 95 percent of votes counted.

Primary night in Virginia was supposed to show a competitive race amongst Democratic - and a blowout amongst Republican - gubernatorial candidates, but voters had a different idea. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Perriello's energetic campaign drew national attention and spurred Northam to adopt a similarly aggressive anti-Trump message.

Northam, a low-key pediatric neurologist, won running as a pragmatist with state's Democratic establishment's firm support. The strategist singled out two House members in Alabama: Mo Brooks, who once characterized Trump as a "serial" adulterer, and Martha Roby, who pulled her support from Trump after videotape surfaced of him bragging about making aggressive sexual advances on women.

"It is time for us to get back on offense and stop playing so much defense", he said. He avoided taking sides in the 2016 primary until early May, when he came out for Trump, and has since tried to keep his distance from the president.

At Northam's event in Arlington, there were cheers and high fives as news spread that he had been declared the victor.

"I trust his leadership". Gillespie will face Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam. "He cares for everyone".

UK official: mosque attack treated as terrorism
On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England. The chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque , Mohammed Kozbar, says the incident was a " cowardly attack " on worshippers.

Northam faced former Rep. Tom Perriello in the primary.

The Virginia gubernatorial primary on Tuesday delivered good news for Democrats and an ominous warning for the Trump-ized GOP.

Perriello pledged in his concession speech to help Northam and said his campaign had shown that a "movement" is "rising up". "Tomorrow morning, Jill Vogel, John Adams and I begin a statewide tour where we'll take this campaign to every corner of our Commonwealth and every voter in Virginia", stated Gillespie in an email. State Sen. Frank Wagner was a distant third.

But Stewart, who frequently savaged Gillespie during the campaign as an out-of-touch former lobbyist, did not immediately concede the race.

"We agreed that we're going to bring all Democrats under the tent starting tonight".

Clothed in a T-shirt that displayed Smokey Bear wearing a "resist" hat, the Democrat voted for Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, the party's establishment favorite, because he thought Northam could win in November. The final tally on Tuesday was about 537,000, almost 70 percent of the electorate in last year's presidential primary.

That's the ultimate goal, and if you win one then whatever you did to get there short of enabling violent crime is justified. According to CBS Sports , Jackson becoming No. 3 will depend on who Magic Johnson will choose as the Lakers' No. 2 pick.

"I think he has the ability to move Virginia forward like McAuliffe has", the 80-year-old said.

Republican strength has eroded in recent Virginia elections, with Democrats now holding all statewide offices.

Ralph Northam, the lieutenant governor, who is endorsed by all of the state's biggest political figures including Governor Terry McAuliffe and Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, won a convincing victory over progressive former congressman Tom Perriello who had been championed by the party's left.

RICHMOND, Va. - After a surprisingly close race, Ed Gillespie clinched the Republican nomination for governor, reports the Associated Press.

On the Republican side, the race remains too close to call between Ed Gillespie and Corey Stewart. Gillespie wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. All six being challenged this year have big fundraising leads over their opponents.

Northam beat opponent Tom Perriello, a one-time USA representative for Virginia's 5th district, with roughly 55 percent of the vote statewide.
