Ex-minister warns May against Brexit betrayal

The announcement of the formal start of discussions was agreed on Thursday between Britain's Brexit minister David Davis and the European Commission's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Both the Conservative and Labour gained votes, largely because Ukip, whose raison d'être is simply to take Britain out of the European Union (which has now been settled by the referendum) saw its share of the vote decimated and transferred to the two main parties.

Reflecting on Britain's longtime European Union membership, Davis says that "there is more that unites us than divides us" despite the June 23, 2016 referendum in which Britain made a decision to break away from the 27 other member nations.

Davis is to say on Monday that Britain wants "both sides to emerge strong and prosperous", according to a statement by the UK's department for exiting the EU.

"We will build the broadest possible consensus for our Brexit plans and that means giving Parliament the maximum amount of time to scrutinize these bills by holding a two-year session of Parliament", she said.

The negotiations have been billed as the most complex in Britain's history as it unravels 44 years of membership and its threat to walk out with no deal in place has anxious European capitals.

With a further million British expatriates in the EU, May too wants a deal on citizens' rights, though the two sides are some way apart.

Other officials around the table include Glyn Williams, Director-General at the Home Office, who will bring his expertise on immigration issues and Catherine Webb, a former treasury official, who is Director of Market Access at DExEU. They are due to give a joint news conference after talks among their teams lasting seven hours.

The first part of the negotiations on an exit agreement, widely described as the "divorce talks", are due to focus on three elements - the continuing rights of citizens in each other's jurisdictions after Brexit, the financial liabilities of the United Kingdom, and Ireland's border.

Opponents of Brexit fear that ditching a 60-year strategy of trying to hedge European integration with a special relationship with Washington or a brittle Commonwealth of former colonies would undermine what remains of Britain's global influence.

Three days after the talks begin, May is due to travel to Brussels for an European Union summit - a chance for the other 27 leaders to take stock of their negotiating partner in the sharply altered climate brought about by the dramas of the past two weeks. In a tweet yesterday afternoon, he said: "Back this weekend in my countryside, Savoie, to draw the strength and energy that the long hike requires".

His solution? Trump was merely responding to a "fake news" Washington Post story , and besides, tweets don't allow for nuance. He said Trump had learned the effectiveness of social media as a communications tool during the campaign.

Three key issues will dominate the first phase of the talks.

The first issue at the Brussels talks will be the status of millions of European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom and British residents of the other 27 countries, including their right to stay, to work, and to access medical care.

Critics argue she is in a weak position to fight Britain's corner against European Union counterparts who question whether her writ still runs in Westminster.
