Finsbury Park Mosque Terror Attack

Police say the driver of a van that hit pedestrians on a London road is a 48-year-old man who has been arrested and taken to a hospital. The other was held at the scene until the police came. Witnesses said they saw him collapse shortly before the attack began.

The incident followed a series of attacks in Britain.

Police said the death of a male victim occurred at the scene near the Finsbury Park Mosque.

The newspaper said the arrested man is "white with black hair". Two of them ran away.

"The man tried to escape". He contained him with two or three other guys and gave him to the police once they arrived.

The Muslim Council of Britain confirmed that worshippers had been targeted in the attack. Our thoughts and prayers are will the victims: "we will comfort them and stand with them".

The imam was hailed as the "hero of the day" by Toufik Kacimi, chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House, outside which the attack took place. So, it's the holy month of Ramadan.

A delivery driver who was on a bike about three cars behind the incident, Mohammad Abdullah, told Sky News he saw the van take a sudden left turn. Officers on patrol nearby were at the scene within seconds and made one arrest.

And he certainly doesn't intend to slow down any time soon. "I still feel fresh", he added. So there's still a lot to improve and a lot to work on, but I'm looking forward to it".

A member of emergency services and forensic officers works on a road near Finsbury Park station after a vehicle struck pedestrians in north London, Monday June 19, 2017. Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

Dozens of people had just finished prayers at the mosque when the vehicle veered into crowds in Seven Sisters Road at about 12.15am. Its terror alert has been set at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

On May 22, a suicide attack killed 22 people and injured almost 60 after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

The Metropolitan Police said that one man was pronounced dead at the scene and ten others were injured.

Finsbury Park mosque used to be infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza. The London Police had called the episode an act of terror. In a statement outside 10, Downing Street, May had said that there was "far too much tolerance of extremism in our country".

Bergen added: "Ramadan, particularly in a country like the United Kingdom, where the days are very long in June, you know you're fasting from dawn to dusk and you're breaking the fast at night".

The scene is just metres from the main railway line linking London with Edinburgh, the main Arsenal Football Club shop and what was the Rainbow Theatre, considered the prestige London concert venue in the 1960s and 1970s.

The mosque, which today operates largely as a community center, rose to worldwide notoriety in the early 2000s, due to its links with Egyptian-born radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri.

Muslim leaders said worshipers were mowed down after leaving a mosque.

Resident Cynthia Vanzella said she was in bed when she heard people shouting.

She said the road was "backed up" with police cars, ambulance and fire engines. No other suspects at the scene were identified or reported to police, it said. We got told to move straight away.

Police said the van driver would also be subject to a mental health assessment in due course.

Several worshippers were in the area at the time of incident after attending Ramzan prayers.

"These were the kinds of comments people were yelling out", she said.

The attacker had been acting violently as he was restrained and allegedly told the injured: "You deserve it".

This is a developing story.
