Former Georgia golfer Brian Harman finishes T-2nd at 2017 US Open

Brooks Koepka could be a star but his U.S. Open win had little intrigue for the average golf fan

Brooks Koepka could be a star but his U.S. Open win had little intrigue for the average golf fan

Koepka was one shot behind Brian Harman going into the final day at Wisconsin but handled the windy conditions superbly and managed to finish on 16-under par, three shots ahead of second-placed Harman, whose hunt for a first career major goes on.

At 13-under on the 13th hole, Koepka was in the lead but still under plenty of pressure. Perhaps his only moment of doubt came on the short 13th. Spieth played in the most hard windy conditions of the day during his morning round. But a deft pitch was followed by an unerring putt from just inside seven feet.

The world No 22 birdied the eighth but dropped a shot at the 10th, before following an eight-foot par save at the 13th with a run of three straight birdies to get to 16 under for the week.

"It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days", said Koepka.

"He was phenomenal - I would've like to have played like that".

Koepka caps a record week with title
A chip on the fourth nearly went in, but then trickled back to 4 feet and he blocked the par putt to the right. It was only the third time in US Open history that the winning score was double digits under par.

"What I've done this week is unbelievable", Koepka.

If you need me next week, I'll be in a chair. "Just because some of the big names didn't have their best game doesn't mean that it's still not a great championship. It was very good to watch". With birdie or even eagle as a possibility to get to 17-under and pass Rory's mark, Koepka nuked one 379 yards.

The fairways were the widest in US Open history and Koepka took full advantage, averaging 307 yards off the tee and hitting 88% of them across the four rounds, tied fourth overall. PHOTO: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images. Success was not long in arriving.

His time in Europe was short-lived though. Surprisingly, that was his only victory until this, his breakthrough at major championship level. Starting on the back nine, he exchanged a birdie on 11 with a bogey on 12. And the wind picking up played right into my hands. I got off to a pretty good start, which I really haven't done yet, so that was nice. I felt confident all week.

Elsewhere, Masters champion Sergio Garcia finished with a 71 to stay on six under, six behind Harman. PHOTO: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images. Kite says "I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting". "I'd like to see another one here, for sure".

President Trump is not under investigation by special counsel, attorney says
A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it. With President Trump's instructions, Vice President Mike Pence has hired Richard Cullen, his own lawyer to represent the U.S.

"I learned a lot this week". But I think what was underestimated was how well he knew me, how well he knew my game.

Mention must also be made of the play of Matsuyama.

The 19-year-old Henderson closed with a 66 on the Blythefield layout that was reduced to a par of 69 - the fifth hole was played as a par 3 instead of a par 5 - the final two rounds because of flooding. He posted the low round of the day. Brooks' nose and sinus cavity were fractured on the dashboard, and for the entire summer he couldn't play any contact sports. Between conversations I've had with Claude [Harmon III] and Pete Cowan sat me down, I think, on Tuesday, and kind of had a conversation with me just kind of staying patient, not trying to win.

It was Matsuyama's best finish in a major, another high in a topsy-turvy season. Me and Scottie are good buddies, so I'm happy for him. I wish him well and congratulate him. "I'll try to beat him the next time".

Stricker said he hopes it comes back, but he would make some slight changes. Not much that is positive at least. It capped quite a journey for the 27-year-old Floridian.
