Golfer Koepka wins his first major at US Open

Hideki Matsuyama closes with 6-under 66 in US Open

He did birdie four of his final six holes at Erin Hills, yet still missed the cut by four shots at five-over-par.

The fast-moving Koepka captured the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open but despite often putting himself in contention, the wins did not continue to flow and from 21 top-10 finishes on the US -based tour, he only had the one victory. It's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and to do it on Father's Day is pretty neat. "I can't fault his work ethic, which is a massive part of it for me".

"I enjoyed playing late on Saturday and Sunday and then next time, whenever that comes, I know that inside myself I feel fine and I can contend for the victory".

The 2010 US Open victor Graeme McDowell left Erin Hills at four-over-par, and he admitted on twitter after Thursday's round that he "Felt uncomfortable on the track today and just didn't play well. The conditions were so tough".

Fleetwood, who had made the cut in just one of his previous seven major appearances, finished alone in fourth on 11 under following a final round of 72, with Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas and Xander Schauffele a shot further back in fifth. Harman ended up closing with a bogey.

"I learned a lot this week", he said.

May faces leadership challenge if she softens Brexit
Northern Ireland's frontier with the Republic of Ireland will be the UK's only land border with the European Union after Brexit . The DUP has been accused of having links to Loyalist paramilitary groups and this maybe is one of John Major's concerns.

Harman said: "I had an opportunity today and I didn't get it done". But I think what was underestimated was how well he knew me, how well he knew my game. "I've done it before, but he did it today".

A changing of golf's old guard has been underway for some time but the 117th U.S. Open signaled that it can be considered complete with neither Phil Mickelson and/or Tiger Woods teeing up at major for the first time since the 1994 U.S. Masters.

But this week, among his peers, Koepka was certainly considered a viable contender with his ability to overpower even the biggest courses - and Erin Hills was the U.S. Open's longest layout ever at almost 7,800 yards.

But with the gusts gradually weakening over the course of the afternoon, Koepka and Harman picked up where they left on Saturday, seamlessly getting into the groove early on to jump ahead of the field.

It looked as if it was going to be a two-man race between Koepka and Harman, the third round leader, after the first few holes.

Thomas, looking for more from where his record-setting 63 came from the day before, was out of the hunt by the middle of the front nine.

Matsuyama had five birdies and one bogey in his final eight holes. Then a 17-footer on 16 for his third birdie in a row.

Tied for the lead with six holes to play, Koepka made an 8-foot par putt on the 13th hole.

Another birdie chance lipped out on the 12th as the tension mounted.

Thomas had 300 yards to the hole for his second shot at the 18th.

"It was a long phone call for us, it was like two minutes", Koepka said.

It was Matsuyama's best finish in a major, another high in a topsy-turvy season. And all of those things put together makes him a great caddie for me. "No regrets, I did play well. Came up a little short", Matsuyama told reporters through an interpreter.

Real Madrid selling Cristiano Ronaldo would be a 'big mistake' - Calderon
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is reportedly very keen on the Brazilian and sees him as a key part of his summer transfer strategy. Mark Ogden isn't overly convinced Cristiano Ronaldo will be leaving Real Madrid after recent reports suggesting otherwise.

Three shots adrift of Pepperell was Paul Casey, who had held a share of lead with Fleetwood on Friday before a tumultuous weekend ruined his chances of ending the week with his first major title.
