Greenland tsunami, floods leave 4 people missing after quake

The western coast of Greenland has been struck with a 4.0 magnitude quake, triggering a tsunami that swept away several houses in coastal villages.

The relatively-small magnitude 4 natural disaster was still enough to trigger a surge of water which destroyed several homes.

'You have seen that in Greenland before, ' Jensen said.

Pictures of the areas affected by the tsunami show debris all over the villages. Nuugaatsiaq has been evacuated but the waves struck at least two other villages.

Some residents posted images to social media showing huge waves breaking over buildings in the town.

The Danish officers will assist in operative command of the rescue efforts as well as relieve hard-pressed colleagues, said a spokesperson from the Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet).

The quake of a magnitude of 4 points occurred on Saturday evening near the settlement of Nuugaatsiaq in South-West Greenland. Authorities have confirmed that four people are missing and that nine people were injured.

The local newspaper, Sermitsiaq, reported that the four feared dead were inside their home in Nuugaatsiaq when waves struck and swept the structure into the ocean.

Local media say several casualties were reported in the incident, with the Greenland government confirming villages Uummannaq and Illorsuit were also affected by the tsunami.
