Mercury rises as Met office issues second highest heatwave alert

The mini-heatwave, which is so hot that the Met Office has warned it's actually 'dangerous', is set to continue tomorrow, with the mercury rising to 28c, but it is expected to begin cooling down on Wednesday.

This yellow-ranked alert, the second most severe of four levels, is triggered as soon as the Met Office forecasts that there is up to a 60 per cent risk of temperatures being high enough on at least two consecutive days to have significant effects on health.

"Sunday and Monday will see repeat performances of Saturday, with a lot of England and Wales seeing dry, sunny, warm, humid weather with high UV, high pollen". Regional temperature threshold values are likely to be approached across most regions away from the northwest, and exceeded in some eastern locations during Sunday and Monday. "Some fresher conditions look likely to spread to some northeastern areas on Tuesday for a time".

The alert informs social and medical services that action will be required for high-risk groups. The Met and the NHS also encourages people to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, wear sun cream and always carry a bottle of water. Open them when it is cooler at night.

Temperatures are due to peak at 34C in certain parts of the United Kingdom - hotter than the Bahamas - before cooling down at least a few degrees by next weekend.

The notice orders hospitals to be on guard with health staff also needed to make daily contact with the ill, vulnerable and elderly.

This has prompted warnings that people should take extra care in the sun.

The heat health warning across the United Kingdom has been increased to its second highest level as Derbyshire continues to bake on the hottest day of the year. This minimum alert simply means that people should be aware of what to do if the alert level is raised.

It will be another hot day with good spells of sunshine.
